“Stand By Me”

ben-e-king_l“Stand By Me” was originally penned by Ben E. King, who initially wrote the song for The Drifters, but recorded the song with Lieber and Stoller and released it in 1961, handling the vocals himself. The song peaked at #4 and was rereleased in 1986 to coincide with the classic coming of age movie, Stand By Me, based on Stephen King’s novella. In it’s rerelease, it peaked at #9.
In 2008, the documentary film, Playing for Change Foundation featured a composite medley of street singers from around the world singing and playing the song. The results are astounding and shown below.
