Trey Anastasio Band — “Don’t Need Nothin’ But A Good Time”

Hidden Track:

As Trey Anastasio and Classic TAB move on from the Northeast leg of their tour onto the Midwest and South, they have left a trail of happy faces in their path. The “anything can happen at anytime” M.O. that Phish lives and dies with is nowhere to be found on TAB Tour, alleviating all the pressure that comes with Phish shows for Trey Anastasio. Big Red and his bandmates are clearly having fun and the happiness is contagious. (continue…)

The Lost Art Of The Mixtape: The College Years

TLAoTMT:

“While going through an old box of cds I found a few mixes that I had made for hanging out with my friends in college. The trickiest thing about these mixes was the balance between a broad range of musical tastes. The song selections were sometimes to teach, and other times to appease. The result was usually a very odd mix, but ultimately a snapshot of that time in my life… 2002.”

Interview with Tom Marshall

fripg4rev-353xHere’s a fantastic interview with Tom Marshall, courtesy of Jambands.com, that was a two part piece in the Festival 8 Express. Very insightful. Check it out:

Other than the fact that Phish has reunited in 2009, ending a 5-year second hiatus that saw their fan base continue to expand, there has been another welcome reunion this year. Trey Anastasio began working with his longtime writing partner, Tom Marshall once again, and together, in collaboration with the members of Phish, they have created their latest album, Joy. The Express sat down with the lyricist shortly before Festival 8 for a candid conversation about that reunion with the guitarist/singer/composer, and their work on Joy, as well as a look back at a few tracks that found their way onto Party Time, the Joy box bonus CD. As regards Joy, Marshall explains, “I see a lot of questions that you and I could clear up, or at least add to the mystery.” And so we open the door…(more…)

Two days before Doctor Jones was supposed to play at this private party our guitar player Casey Grant’s father-in-law died suddenly.
We knew our college friend Trey was going to be at the party and asked if he would play a few songs with us to fill the guitar slot. Trey showed up and encouraged everyone to try mezcal shots with listerine cool mint gel tabs on their tongues. Trey dubbed the new drink sensation a “chrysalis”. The mezcal combined with some excellent brownies inspired the interpration of the music.
Trey had never heard the original tunes that we ran through that night, and probably had not played many of the cover tunes in years. The show is loose but provides several moments of great jamming. It is an interesting historical document at any rate.

Last night, Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio got to fulfill that dream when he took the stage with the most legendary orchestra in the world at arguably the most famous venue in the world and he made the most of the opportunity. Trey in Baltimore

trey09Hidden Track:

Phish guitarist and singer Trey Anastasio reached deep into his bag of tricks for his performance tonight with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Charm City. Among the Phish classics Anastasio performed with the ensemble was If I Could – a song Phish hasn’t played in nearly nine years. An emotional highlight came when Water In The Sky was played in memory of Trey’s sister, Kristy Manning, and dedicated to her son. (more…)

Trey Anastasio — Time Turns Elastic hits streets 5/12

23305822-23305825-slargeJambands.com:

Time Turns Elastic the orchestral piece composed by Trey Anastasio and Don Hart has been recorded in a studio setting for a May 12 release. Anastasio and The Northwest Sinfonia appear on the recording, which was conducted by David Sabee. The piece debuted in September 2008, with a performance by Anastasio and Orchestra Nashville at the Ryman Auditorium. In a press release, Anastasio describes the origins of the piece, noting, “I was living in upstate New York when I started writing this little tune that just kept growing. I initially thought it would be a Phish song, but after I sent a demo of it to Don, it just grew organically into an orchestral piece.” On Thursday May 21, Anastasio and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Marin Alsop, will perform the composition along with Phish songs and Anastasio solo material. For a bit more on the origins of Time Turns Elastic, check out our September interview with Don Hart.

Trey to join Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (5/21/09)

bso4Trey Anastasio will join Music Director Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for orchestrations of classic Phish tunes and the East Coast premiere of his composition Time Turns Elastic at 8p.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Tickets will be available through a real time pre sale beginning Thursday, February 19th at 5pm (EST) and ending Friday, February 27th at Noon (EST) at http://treytickets.rlc.net Tickets go on-sale to the public Saturday, February 28th at noon (EST). Audio taping tickets will not be sold for this event.

The first half of the program features classic Phish songs and solo Trey compositions, while second half of the program features the East Coast premiere of Time Turns Elastic, co-composed by Anastasio and long-time collaborator Don Hart. Time Turns Elastic is a groundbreaking work for vocals, electric guitar and orchestra with long, orchestral passages intertwined with epic guitar lines and vocals in the vein of such classic Anastasio compositions as The Divided Sky, Guyute and Fluffhead. With Anastasio’s electric guitar at the forefront, Time Turns Elastic pushes the limits of orchestral music and delivers a complete articulation of the Baltimore Symphony’s mission to present new musical collaborations that challenge and inspire audiences. “Most of the time when people use an electric instrument with an orchestra, they destroy the capability to blend,” notes Anastasio. “Our approach is to handle it as any other solo instrument. I play at the volume of say, an oboe, so Don can orchestrate around the guitar.”

Trey on Frank Zappa

frank-zappa232342It’s no secret that Frank Zappa was a huge influence on Trey Anastasio and Phish. I remember reading this piece Trey wrote on Zappa for Rolling Stone a few years ago, but just came across it on Phantasy Tour and thought I’d share for those of you that had perhaps missed it.

In the early years of Phish, people often said we were like “Frank Zappa meets the Grateful Dead” — which sounds very bizarre. But Zappa was incredibly vital to me, as a composer and guitarist. I think he was the best electric-guitar player, other than Jimi Hendrix. Zappa conceptualized the instrument in a completely different way, rhythmically and sonically. Every boundary that was possible on the guitar was examined by him.
I’ll never forget the first time I saw him live, in New York, when I was in high school. He would leave his guitar on a stand as he conducted the band. He would get the keyboard player doing a riff, get him in key, while he was smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee, pacing around as he got this groove going. And he would not pick up the guitar until everything was totally together. There would be this moment — this collective breath from the audience — as he walked over, picked it up and started playing the most ripping, beautiful solo. When he played, he was in communion with the instrument.
Another thing that was very cool: His interplay was always with drummers. In a lot of jam-style guitar playing, the drummer sets off a groove, and the guitarist riffs off another guitarist or keyboard player. I saw Zappa at Memorial Auditorium in Burlington, Vermont, on his last tour, in 1988. He did this guitar solo in “City of Tiny Lites” where everybody in the band dropped out except drummer Chad Wackerman. I was in the balcony near the side of the stage. When Zappa turned his back on the audience to play with Chad, I saw this huge smile on his face. They were ripping together, and he was blissed out.
But it says so much about Zappa that this was also the guy who did orchestral pieces like The Yellow Shark. It’s hard to believe somebody could do so many different things in a lifetime.
Zappa was a huge influence on how I wrote music for Phish. Songs like “You Enjoy Myself” and “Split Open and Melt” were completely charted out — drums, bass lines, everything — because he had shown me it was possible. And when I went to Bonnaroo two years ago with my ten-piece band, we did two covers, Charlie Daniels’ “Devil Went Down to Georgia” and “Sultans of Swing,” by Dire Straits. In both songs, I had the horn section play the guitar solos, note for note. I never would have thought of doing that if I hadn’t seen Zappa do “Stairway to Heaven” in Burlington, with the horns playing Jimmy Page’s entire guitar solo, in harmony.
That’s not what people are doing these days. I’m making a new album, and the producer I’m working with told me that there is a whole generation of musicians coming up who can’t play their instruments. Because of stuff like Pro Tools, they figure they can fix it all in the studio. Whereas with Frank, his musicians were pushed to the absolute brink of possibility on their instruments, at all times. Phish tried hard to do that too: to take our four little instruments and do as much as we could with them. I would not have envisioned those possibilities without him.
Zappa gave me the faith that anything in music was possible. He demystified the whole thing for musicians in my generation: “Look, these are just instruments. Find out what the range is, and start writing.”

Happy Birthday — Django Reinhardt

django9Brief bio found on YouTube:

Jean-Baptiste “Django” Reinhardt (January 23, 1910 — May 16, 1953) was a Belgian Sinto Gypsy jazz guitarist. He was one of the first prominent jazz musicians to be born in Europe, and one of the most renowned jazz guitarists of all time. His most renowned works include “My Sweet”, “Minor Swing”, “Tears”, “Belleville”, “Djangology” and “Nuages”. Reinhardt spent most of his youth in gypsy encampments close to Paris, playing banjo, guitar and violin from an early age professionally at Bal-musette halls in Paris. He started first on the violin and eventually moved on to a banjo-guitar .At the age of 18 Reinhardt was injured in a fire that ravaged the caravan he shared with Bella, his first wife. They were very poor, and to supplement their income Bella made imitation flowers out of celluloid and paper. Consequently, their home was full of this highly flammable material. Returning from a performance late one night, Django apparently knocked over a candle on his way to bed. While his family and neighbors were quick to pull him to safety, he received first- and second-degree burns over half his body. His right leg was paralyzed and the third and fourth fingers of his left hand were badly burnt. Doctors believed that he would never play guitar again and intended to amputate one of his legs. Reinhardt refused to have the surgery and left the hospital after a short time; he was able to walk within a year with the aid of a cane. In 1934, Louis Vola formed the “Quintette du Hot Club de France” with Reinhardt, violinist Stéphane Grappelli, Reinhardt’s brother Joseph and Roger Chaput on guitar, and himself on bass. The concept of “lead guitar” (Django) and backing “rhythm guitar” (Joseph Reinhardt/Roger Chaput or Pierre Ferret) was born with that band. When World War II broke out, the original quintet was on tour in the United Kingdom. Reinhardt returned to Paris. Reinhardt survived World War II unscathed, unlike the many Gypsies who perished in the porajmos, the Nazi regime’s systematic murder of several hundred thousand European Gypsies, quite a few of whom were sent to death camps. He was especially fortunate because the Nazi regime did not allow jazz to be performed and recorded. He apparently enjoyed the protection of the Luftwaffe officer Dietrich Schulz-Köhn, nicknamed “Doktor Jazz”, who deeply admired his music. Many musicians have expressed admiration for Reinhardt , including guitarist Jimmy McCulloch, classical guitarist Julian Bream; country artist Chet Atkins, who placed Reinhardt #1 on a list of the ten most influential guitarists of the 20th century ; Carlos Santana; B.B. King; Jerry Garcia; Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi; Jimi Hendrix; Synyster Gates; Shawn Lane; Stevie Ray Vaughan; Derek Trucks; Mark Knopfler; Les Paul; Joe Pass; Peter Frampton; Denny Laine; Jeff Beck; Jon Larsen; Trey Anastasio; Steve Howe; Charlie Christian and George Benson. Jimi Hendrix is said to have named one of his bands the Band of Gypsys because of Django’s music. The Allman Brothers Band song “Jessica” was written by Dickey Betts in tribute to Reinhardt — he wanted to write a song that could be played using only two fingers. This aspect of the artist’s work also inspired Tony Iommi, who continued playing guitar despite a factory accident cost him his two fingertips.
