R.I.P. — Jaco Pastorius (1951-1987)
Dying young with the actual events shrouded in mystery, Jaco was certainly heard loud and clear in the music industry, leaving no question to his talent. Here’s some music from his Word Of Mouth band (’82).
Happy Birthday — Jaco Pastorius
Legendary jazz bassist, Jaco Pastorious was born on this date in 1951. Jaco sadly died a premature death at the tender age of 35 in 1987. Considered by many to be the most innovative bassist in the jazz fusion movement of the 1970′s, playing with Mahavishnu Orchestra and breaking out with a solo album in 1975. jaco pastorius may well have been the last jazz musician of the 20th century to have made a major impact on the musical world at large. everywhere you go,sometimes it seems like a dozen times a day, in the most unlikely places you hear jaco’s sound; from the latest tv commercial to bass players of all stripes copping his licks on recordings of all styles, from news broadcasts to famous rock and roll bands, from hip hop samples to personal tribute records, you hear the echoes of that unmistakable sound everywhere.

Although the details of Jaco’s death are still sketchy, one thing remains clear, he passed on this date (actually September 21) in 1987. RIP Jaco.
