moe.down 11 announced.
After a successful and enjoyable decade in Turin, moe.down opts for a change of scenery: Gelston Castle Estate in Mohawk, NY. Or perhaps we should say…moe.hawk?
First Roosevelt, then Rostropovich. Now moe. will bring crowds over Labor Day weekend to the 330-acre Central New York site, which boasts breath-taking views of the Mohawk Valley and an impressive history. Majestic ruins of the 1833 castle still stand, along with the 8,300 square foot mansion built by cellist and humanitarian Mstislav “Maestro” Rostropovich, which now operates on windpower. Often called “Nature’s Palace”, the estate was once the place where the Nation’s most historic environmental advocate, President Theodore Roosevelt, spent his childhood summers, and is now the home of Green Leadership Institute. It is 20 minutes from Utica, NY. (more..)

moe. will kick off their 20th anniversary tour on January 22 and 23 with a two-night stand in New York City at Roseland Ballroom. The January 22 show will be a special benefit for WHY (World Hunger Year), a non-profit organization that was founded in 1975 to fight poverty in the United States and around the world. Several special guests will be announced for the January 22 show in the coming weeks. Throughout the year, moe. plans to participate in and host events to bring awareness to World Hunger issues, as well as continue working with Headcount, Freedom for Burma, and many other charities.
In addition to the New York City shows, moe. will play throughout their twenty-year home base of the Northeast, with stops in Boston, Ithaca, Rochester and Pennsylvania. They will then head to the West Coast, the Midwest and Southeast. On March 26, 27 and 28, moe. will once again host Snoe.down. The popular winter sports and music festival will take place in Killington and Rutland, VT.
Also planned is an exclusive island getaway to the Dominican Republic April 21 – 25. More news on these events will be posted in the coming days, including the all inclusive fees for the island getaway and ski packages for snoe.down.
moe. says “no” to give New Year’s a go for second year in a row.
The band is poised to take New Year’s Eve off again for the second year in a row. The band’s website states, “We are aware that there has been much rumor and speculation surrounding New Year’s Eve. We have decided to spend the holidays with our families and to gear up for our 20th anniversary year, so there will not be a New Year’s Eve moe. show this year. We hope to see you on Halloween and during the Fall tour!” So there you have it. Bummer, eh?

moe.’s Wormwood album of the aughts?
moe.’s annual moe.down kicked off today what promises to be an epic weekend in the mountains. Hidden Track had recently asked me to submit my album of the millenium, which was coincidentally the epic Wormwood. Hidden Track:
Never too far from my CD changer since its release, moe.’s 2003 epic Wormwood, represents the best of what moe. is as a band. The majority of the tracks were recorded live on their 2002 summer tour and then taken into the studio for generous helpings of tweaking and sweetening. Clocking in at roughly 60 minutes, the album typifies a strong live set with studio sheen and captures the essence of a live show. The album answers the age old question ‘can a jamband record a good studio album?’, with an emphatic yes! The twin dueling guitar work of Chuck Garvey and Al Schnier is prominently featured throughout, cartwheeling and jabbing; bobbing and weaving. Rob Derhak’s steady, penetrating and throbbing bass lines coupled with Vinnie Amico’s and Jim Loughlin’s tasteful percussive accents and vibe work make this mother groove along.
The songs on the album flow with liquid ease and segue into one another making this cohesive effort a shape shifting and gliding masterpiece. The album offers a lot of fun in the form of Okayalright and Kids, the former would have definitely been a stoner’s anthem in the ’70s and the latter displaying a Fire On The Mountain hook. The title track languidly oozes out of the album’s opener, Not Coming Down which features some excellent vocal harmony work. The reggae tinged Crab Eyes is moe. at their most inspired, as is Bullett. Both are on the money and feature explosive tension and release structure. The centerpiece on the album is Kyle’s Song which displays dueling guitar pyrotechnics with its multi-textured structure, offering layers of sounds and studio effects. It could be said that there is almost too much to digest in one listen, but that’s where the greatest payoff lies, the complete piece. But watch out, this thing has teeth and balls. (more…)
