Kuroda interviewed by Waful
Cool little interview here with Chris Kuroda (Phish lighting director) by Jeff Waful (Umphrey’s McGee/moe. lighting director) from our friends at Jambands.com:
An electrifying cheer drowns out the triumphant coda of “Fluffhead” as fractured flashes of white light divide the ominous night sky. What is most striking is that when asked moments later about the spectacular finger lightning that accompanied his work, Phish lighting designer Chris Kuroda says, “I didn’t notice.” This is perhaps the essence of any great artist: being so focused on his craft that the outside world ceases to exist. My favorite period of Miles is his electric period, in which he merged acid rock and funk. This show captures Miles at one of his many peaks in his incredible career.

Phish — Sessions at West 54th
Great post here by Dog Gone Blog covering Phish’s 1998 performance on PBS’ Sessions at West 54th, hosted by David Byrne. I remember catching this while we were on a ski trip and being unaware that the band had taped this. You can imagine my surprise coming across this while flipping through the channels one late evening in Utah.
On October 20, 1998, Phish performed on David Byrne’s PBS TV show Sessions at West 54th at Sony Music Studios in New York. In an intimate show, with a crowd of only 200, the band delivered a stellar performance. One day after the Bridge School Benefit, where Neil Young sat in with the band, Phish was clearly riding a high wave. The set was partially aired, interspersed with an interview with band, by David Byrne. The interview deals with a wide range of topics, from the recording of Story of the Ghost to Mike’s religious experience at Goddard. For those of you who have not heard the show, or seen the interviews, we have posted them both below. (more…) Video and audio contained within link.
Click here to check out the video performance portion of the show.

R.I.P. — Jaco Pastorius (1951-1987)
Dying young with the actual events shrouded in mystery, Jaco was certainly heard loud and clear in the music industry, leaving no question to his talent. Here’s some music from his Word Of Mouth band (’82).

Private Party with:
Rob Dasaro – keys, vocals
Steve Drebber – drums, vocals
Jim Tasse – bass, vocals
with special guests
Trey Anastasio – guitar
“Mr. Charlie” Frazier – blues harp
Notes:(Steve Drebber)
Two days before Doctor Jones was supposed to play at this private party our guitar player Casey Grant’s father-in-law died suddenly.
We knew our college friend Trey was going to be at the party and asked if he would play a few songs with us to fill the guitar slot. Trey showed up and encouraged everyone to try mezcal shots with listerine cool mint gel tabs on their tongues. Trey dubbed the new drink sensation a “chrysalis”. The mezcal combined with some excellent brownies inspired the interpration of the music.
Trey had never heard the original tunes that we ran through that night, and probably had not played many of the cover tunes in years. The show is loose but provides several moments of great jamming. It is an interesting historical document at any rate.
