R.I.P. — Captain Beefheart (1941-2010) — True to his own spirit
Don Van Vliet AKA Captain Beefheart passed yesterday at the age of 69. A truly original artist in every sense of the word. Vliet worked off/on with Zappa through the years and with his own Magic Band. Never one to be fenced in or labeled, his unmistakable tortured vocals can be heard in the songs below. His career shifted to paintings, sculpting and drawings that would prove to be highly sought after works. His last many years had been spent in seclusion after many reports came forward claiming him to be afflicted with multiple sclerosis.
Rest well, Captain.

Phish: New Years play for pay
Can’t make Phish’s New Years shows in NYC? How would you like for them to play live… on your computer, for the low, low price of $39.95? LivePhish.com has the info…
Arabesque — Estes Park, CO (10/25/80)
Arabesque – “a little bit Django, a little bit Dawg.” I gave this a listen a while back and fell in love with it. Beautiful music that’s 30+ years old. To put it in perspective, when they’re playing Norwegian Wood on this recording, John Lennon was still alive and well in NYC. Check it out and let me know what you think…

Jimbo to be pardoned
Jim Morrison to be pardoned 39 1/2 years after his death…
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Doors’ Jim Morrison will get a posthumous pardon Thursday for an indecent exposure conviction in Florida that resulted when the late singer pulled what a bandmate called “a mind trip on the audience, and they totally fell for it.”
Gov. Charlie Crist on Wednesday got a commitment for the second of two votes needed from other members of the state’s Board of Executive Clemency to approve the pardon. (more…)
I guess it’s kind of cool to do this, but why now? His mother and father are dead. He died in 1971. Well, happy 67th Mr. Mojo. Also, for a good listen of the reconfigured Doors, as in the latter portion of their career, when they shifted from art-rock pop songs to white boy- chugging blues and R&B, check out the new Live In Vancouver release. It features Albert King on a few tracks, giving the band a two guitar approach that was only seen on the L.A. Woman album.
Phish — Live Bait, Vol. 3
In celebration of Worcester’s past, Phish has released the Live Bait, Vol. 3. A 59 minute Runaway Jim? Check. An Auld Lang Syne that morphs into a then unheard of jam (was labeled Zappa jam on my original tape) that would later be known as Down With Disease? Check. A fiery Llama and sublimely smokin’ SOAMelt? Check and check. Free? Check.
Check it out here. Check.
Kanye’s verbal leakage.
What shocks me is that this guy is serious. How can you be so self centered, yet so clueless at the same time?
Lotus In The Bliss
Posted by Spoonypony on YouTube. Not sure how I got to this video, but I dig. Good stuff, man.
They Said What??
Taken from The Floor,
“Drinks turned into multiple drinks,” recalls Bayliss. “You know when you wake up the next day after a night of drinking and you can’t really remember what happened, but you know something stupid happened? You’re swimming in remorse and then it hits you. Apparently I had fallen and hit my head and Huey picked me up and carried me to bed and tucked me in. I woke up the next morning with a knot on my head and said to myself ‘wait, did Huey Lewis tuck me in last night?’ I was that guy.“

Jimbo to be pardoned?
Well folks, Charlie Crist may be pardoning Jim Morrison after all. I know it would’ve made this man happy.
CNN.com
The charismatic but unpredictable lead singer of American rock band The Doors could be about to receive a posthumous pardon almost 40 years after being convicted of exposing himself on stage.
Jim Morrison had been performing with the band at a typically raucous concert at Miami’s Key Auditorium on March 1, 1969 when the incident took place. Reportedly drunk and slurring obscenities at the crowd, he was accused of unzipping his pants and simulating a sex act, a charge he denied.
Despite being acquitted of lascivious behavior and drunkenness, Morrison was convicted of indecent exposure and open profanity and sentenced to six months in jail. He was still appealing the verdict in 1971 when he died in Paris at the age of 27. (Continue reading…)
Derek & The Dominos on The Johnny Cash Show
I’ve posted this on here before, but thought about this video this morning. After the band plays “It’s Too Late”, stick around for some interplay between Cash, Carl Perkins, Clapton and the rest of the ‘noes.
What in the bloody hell does Mick Jagger think about Keith Richards’ biography?
I am, I see here, marginally endowed, if I read Keith’s sniggering aright. I do not sing well, either. I am not polite to employees; indeed, I have even been known to say, “Oh, shut up, Keith,” in band meetings. I do not appreciate the authenticity of the music or the importance of what we do. I want to “lord it over” the band, like James Brown. I am “insufferable.” I slept with Anita.
Most of that is in just the first quarter of this overlong book, but a tattoo of my failings sounds all through it and culminates in almost 20 full pages of rambling invective near the end.
I don’t mind this, really, for reasons I hope are understandable and will get into later. This is all from a guy pushing 70 for whom gays are still “poofters” and women “bitches.” I think so many things about Keith. We were close, the two of us, for many years. We had known each other in grade school, if you can believe it, in the same undistinguished eastern suburb. Then we bumped into each other in a train station at 18 or so and started talking about the blues. We were different; I’d already been on TV with my father, who was a fairly notable expert on physical education at the time. Keith was … rougher, let’s say. For the next nearly 10 years, we were rarely apart. Even after we were famous, we lived at each others’ flats or houses. We were still very young, and, like puppies, we’d cluster together. (more….)
Look who popped in backstage…
You never know what kind of riffraff you’ll run into backstage.
Umphrey’s McGee — “Bittersweet Haji”
Here’s UM tackling a mashup of Hajimemashite and Allen Klein’s favorite song, Bittersweet Symphony.
Little Feat — “Spanish Moon”
Although I was a tad disappointed that the Halloween album wasn’t Physical Graffiti, Waiting Foe Columbus is certainly a killer album. I actually can’t think of too many live albums that sound fresher, crisper and ALIVE! Long live Lowell George and Paul Barrere. Here’s a download I posted back in ’08.
Led Zeppelin — “Trampled Underfoot”
This takes me back to the summer of ’88, which is when I first fell in love with Physical Graffiti. My favorite song from the album changes yearly, but this one holds a special place in my heart. I had been a Zep fan for about 18 months and I believe that PG was the 5th or 6th album of theirs I bought. It seemed so expensive at the time- it was on two tapes! This was one of those albums I would put on and just listen to whole thing. I had a boom box in my room and me and my friends would groove to Trampled, rock out to The Rover and Custard Pie, become mesmerized by In My Time Of Dying, etc., etc.
There have been rumors of Phish playing PG for Halloween stretching back to ’94. This is what I want them to play. Others would be good, this would be great. The aura of mystery that surrounds this year’s choice is quite intriguing, no overblown website, no secret codes to unscramble. Nothing.

Phish — Charleston ’10, Coral Sky
Like Vikings conquering the far shores, Phish did everything short of raping and pillaging Charleston over the weekend. We’re collecting our thoughts and photos, while simultaneously juggling our 9-5′s, but will have our review up post haste. We’ll also be adding our $0.02 on the new Coral Sky release, which we gratefully received last week.
