Mike Gordon — “Soulfood Man”
Great song from an even better album, Gordo’s 2003 album, Inside In.
Delaney & Bonnie & Friends
Quick! What do you call a band with a Beatle, Clapton, a member of Traffic, the rhythm section of Derek & The Dominoes, Stax horns with Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett? Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, of course. Taken from 12/1/69.
Jim Morrison & T.E. Breitenbach
In late 1970, Jim Morrison was tidying up some of poetry with plans to go into the recording studio on his 27th birthday (12/8) and record a spoken word/poetry album. Jim set forth in completing some of the groundwork for the upcoming, remaining in complete creative control of this project. Jim sent a letter dated 10/9/70 to a young Doors fan whose art Jim admired, named T.E. Breitenbach that read,
Dear Mr. Breitenbach,
Thank you for your interest. Maybe we can do something.
Try doing a triptych. The left panel depicting a radiant moon-lit beach and an endless stream of young na ked couples running silently along the water’s edge. On the beach, a tiny infant grins at the universe and around its crib stand several ancient, old people.
The center — a modern city or metropolis of the future at noon, insane with activity.
The last panel — a view through a car windshield at night on a long straight desert highway.
If you come up with something related to these themes within the next four or five months I’m sure I can use it.
Thanks again.
Sincerely,
James Morrison
Once the artwork had been completed (seen above), Breitenbach submitted his artwork to the Doors’ office in Los Angeles. He was told that Jim Morrison had moved to France for some time. Needless to say, Jim never made it back and the poetry album was put on hold until 1978 when it was released as An American Prayer with background sounds and music credited to the remaining Doors. Breitenbach’s art was never used, but I supposed he got a nifty story out of it.

Buffalo Springfield to regroup at Bridge School Benefit
1968: We hadn’t landed on the moon, Kennedy and MLK were assassinated, the Beatles were together and Buffalo Springfield were still performing. The latter haven’t performed as a group since, but will for Neil Young’s annual concert for disabled children at Shoreline Ampitheatre.
The lineup for this year’s Bridge School Benefit has finally been confirmed and Hall of Fame rockers Buffalo Springfield are on top of the bill for the pair of concerts which take place at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA on October 23rd and 24th. Buffalo Springfield’s classic lineup consists of Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Richie Furay, Dewey Martin, & Bruce Palmer. Sadly, Dewey Martin and Bruce Palmer have passed away. No word yet on who will join Stills and Young on stage for the band’s first performance since 1968. (more…)

The Avett Brothers — “And It Spread”
We’re catching the Avett’s tonight in Atlanta and couldn’t be more excited. There’s a unique emotionalism that the band evokes in a live setting that’s palpable. If you should happen to see us, come say hi! Here’s what we look like:
Did You Know??
The Beatles recorded their first album, Please Please Me in 1962 in 12 hours and for a cost of $1,000.
Ray LaMontagne — “Repo Man”
From the new album, God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise. I cannot recommend this album enough. There’s a raw warmth that emanates throughout the album, although it certainly possesses Ray’s trademark emotional fragility.
Eric Clapton — “Sign Language”
Taking on the Dylan-penned song. From ’76.

The funny thing about this show is that the band had already decided to break up shortly before the tour started. They had just released Deja Vu, which almost completely fractured the band. The story is, Steve Stills was head over heels in love with Rita Coolidge (The Raven) and along came the debonair Englishman, Graham Nash and crooked his finger and she ambled over to him, breaking Stills’ heart in the process. David Crosby wrote “Cowboy Movie” about the whole episode. Here’s a picture of Rita from the period and the lyrics from the inspired song.
“Me and my good partners
We were riding back to our camp
We were feeling very fine
The air was clear and slightly damp
We were riding back to have ourselves a party
To celebrate the robbing of the train
We were talking kind of low and lazy
’bout not having to go out soon again
You know we hadn’t been back at home two hours
We heard a hawk cry out in the night
And you know that’s a signal from young Billy who’s our sentry
Saying something here ain’t exactly right, oh
We quick grabbed some of our hardware
Stumbled out of our home
Two minutes flat we had found her
An Indian girl all alone
And Eli said let’s take her back to the cabin
I said you don’t know she might be the law, yeah
He said smiling kind of nasty it ain’t too damn likely
She’ll beat me to the draw, oh no
As we were walking back through the darkness
I heard the Duke he’s our dynamiter say
He said what’s your name sweet little Indian girl
She said Raven and she looked away
Right then I didn’t trust her no no I said so, oh no
Now Eli he’s our fastest gunner
He’s kind of mean and young from the South
He said Fat Albert you’re getting kind of old and weird now
You’d better get your 12 gauge shotgun right out and I did oh you know I did
Now Eli and the Duke they got down to it
They each wanted that Indian girl for their own
When they finally got around to asking her
You know she said she’d come to take young Billy home, oh no, no, no
Eli said he’d kill young Billy
He’d kill the Duke and probably me too, yeah
That Indian girl said go ahead now do it
I said stop and she bit my thumb nearly clean through, oh
And when they finally started to break down the door, yeah
I smeared my face up with blood from my thumb, yeah
I laid down on the floor and played real good possum
You know I’m crazy but I ain’t real dumb, oh no
Now I’m dying here in Albuquerque
I must be the sorriest sight you ever saw
You know the reason I’m the only one here to tell it
You know that Indian girl she wasn’t an Indian she was the law”
Bear Creek adds another week for early bird tickets
Bear Creek Music Festival (Nov. 12-14) has extended its early bird pricing of $125 per ticket for another week. We went to this festival last year and it was far and away our favorite (sorry Bonnaroo). Beautiful and amazing site coupled with 2 nights of Umphrey’s, moe., Lettuce, P-Groove, etc., etc.? Yeah, count us in. Actually we’ve already gotten tickets and cannot wait.
Here are some of our pictures from last year:
Phish announce Coral Sky DVD release
Hallelujah! On 10/19, Phish will be dropping another landmark show on DVD.
Amid the swaying palms and soft breezes of South Florida, the two-and-a-half hour plus concert showcased some of the most unique and compelling playing of the band’s career, including a transcendent pairing of “Crosseyed And Painless” and “Run Like An Antelope.” Santana’s Karl Perazzo was featured on percussion throughout the show. Perazzo, who had become acquainted with the band members during their 1992 and 1996 summer tours with Santana, added polyrhythms that explored new space within Phish’s music in this deeply experimental show. Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks sat in for the encore, “Funky Bitch.”

They Said What??
“Well there are three things men can do with women: love them, suffer for them or turn them into literature. I’ve had my share of success and failure at all three.“
