They Said What??

Talking about music is like dancing about architecture.

Frusciante on leaving the RHCP

John Frusciante has posted the following on his MySpace page.

“To put it simply, my musical interests have led me in a different direction. I really love the band and what we did. Over the last 12 years, I have changed, as a person and artist, to such a degree that to do further work along the lines I did with the band would be to go against my own nature. “There was no choice involved in this decision. I simply have to be what I am, and have to do what I must do.”

If you haven’t checked out his most recent solo release, The Empyrean, you should.

The Avett Brothers — “The Perfect Space”

In anticipation of attending The Avett Bros. show on New Year’s Day, I was checking out some of their recent performances and ran into this clip of The Perfect Space. The track hits in the 5 hole on the band’s recent release, the Rick Rubin produced “I And Love And You”. The texture friendly album mixes the Avett’s unique combination of bluegrass/country/folk/punk/pop and is one of my favorites of ’09. Give it a listen.

From the Keith Albee Theatre in West Virginia. 10/29/09.

Dickey Betts announces that he’s retiring from touring

DickeyBetts.com announced the following:

In New York City, a place where Dickey Betts had had many great achievements, he played what will possibly become his last touring date on December 12, his 66th birthday.
“I’m not retiring from playing. I’m sure there will be some great special events that I’ll be at in the future. But for now, I look forward to waking up tomorrow with nothing on my schedule.”
After more than 40 years of constant touring it’s time for a well deserved break. Stay tuned for updates on the Great Southern Band members and their associated projects, as well as updates on Dickey himself.

At The Barbecue: Favorite Concerts of ’09

Hidden Track recently published a listing of their crew’s fave shows of ’09. The opinions and viewpoints vary, making it pretty darn interesting read. Check it out.

It’s been a few months since the HT Crew got together for an old fashioned cookout. With the cold weather creeping in and the holiday season upon us we thought we’d get the gang together one last time this year to throw some large hunks of meat on the grill and crack open a few Troeg’s Mad Elf Ale’s for another rousing edition of At The Barbecue. The Lost Art Of The Mixtape: The College Years

TLAoTMT:

“While going through an old box of cds I found a few mixes that I had made for hanging out with my friends in college. The trickiest thing about these mixes was the balance between a broad range of musical tastes. The song selections were sometimes to teach, and other times to appease. The result was usually a very odd mix, but ultimately a snapshot of that time in my life… 2002.”

RIP — Rick Danko (1942-1999)

rick_danko_1The Band’s bassist had one of the most unique voices in rock music. A heartfelt yearning and emotion was felt in every note he ever sang, Rick died 10 years ago today at the age of 57.

Here’s Rick with “When You Awake”:

Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeroes — “Home”

Kind of a catchy little tune.

Phish — Ya Mar> Naked Guy > Ya Mar >Antelope

RIP — John Lennon (10/1/1940) – (12/8/1980)

imagine2December 8, 1980: Psycho and modern day nut, Mark David Chapman killed John Lennon outside of Lennon’s NYCity home at The Dakota. Chapman thought he was Jesus/Holden Caufield and basically just bat$h&t crazy. Click here and here to read further details of that fateful day. I remember telling my parents the news after seeing the report on Monday Night Football. Of course I was six years old, but I knew that this was important-I knew who The Beatles were, but probably couldn’t have picked out John at that time. Chapman has remained in New York’s Attica State Prison since his conviction in 1980. An incredibly senseless and pointless act of violence.

E-mail us at musicalstewdaily@yahoo.com and tell us what John means to you. First three respondants receive an excellent collection of Lennon songs.

Here’s John’s late period song, “Watching The Wheels”:

Lennon’s response to McCartney’s “Dear Boy”:

“Jealous Guy” from Imagine:

Lennon and Howard Cosell:

Phish — “Peaches En Regalia”
