Cornmeal — “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover”

Cornmeal covering Paul Simon’s classic.

I was there the night Jeff Tweedy punched a guy in Missouri…

wilco_punch_mainPaste Magazine:

I’ve seen my share of beer-heaving, mosh pit-circling shows; I used to watch my brother who was a drummer in a heavy-metal band. But nothing will compare to the wildest concert I’ve ever attended. The night Wilco played at the Shrine Mosque in Springfield, Mo. will forever be etched in my mind with images of Fez hats and Jeff Tweedy punching a boisterous stage crasher. (more…)

Fleet Foxes @ Hard Rock Calling

pecknoldClockender’s take:

Sandwiched between a pretty impotent set by Ben Harper and standard stuff from headliner Neil Young (with surprise cameo from old chum Paul McCartney thrown in) Fleet Foxes, and in particular Robin Pecknold’s voice, proved early saviours in what threatened to be a washed out ending to the day. The rains came down just before they were due on on stage, but soon the effortless delivery of their intricate four-part harmonies parted the clouds and all was well. (more…)

The Atlanta Pop Festival turns 40…

atlantapopfestivalCheck photog, Philip Rauls account of the storied festival.

In what is widely regarded as one of the top concerts events of all time, the Atlanta International Pop Festival of 1969 was held over the Fourth Of July weekend at the Atlanta International Raceway. The concert featured the entertainment industry’s top bands and attracted extremely large crowds from distant locations. Attendance for the Atlanta Pop, as it would be later coined, ranged from estimates of over 100,000 people to 250,000. The concert was organizied by promoter Alex Cooley and set the stage for the greater acknowledged Woodstock Festival which took place later that summer. The holiday weekend event was canvassed by a heat wave that soared to temperatures of over 100 degrees and set-up an additional story within. Yet strangely enough, only a few photographers have captured this historic milestone and put the landmark event into documentation form. With that being the case, several months back I was speaking with my friend Carter Tomassi, a well-respected photographer who has also chronicled the pop festival on his web site. Carter suggested that I post an updated story on my blog in honor of the 40th anniversary timeline. So, with his recommendation in mind, I decided to piece together a photo journal of previously unviewed festival photographs and share with fellow concert attendees and loyal PHOTOLOG blog enthusiasts. R.I.P. — Lowell George

lowellgeorge1Slide guitar extraordinnaire Lowell George, passed on this date in 1979. After a brief stint with Zappa’s Mothers Of Invention, George founded Little Feat (named for his small, fat feet), whom he triumphantly lead throughout the 70′s. George also tried his hand at producing, most famously taking the helm for the Dead’s Shakedown Street. Here’s a ripping “Dixie Chicken” from 1977:

Heavy Metal addiction?

heavy-metalI wonder if my employer would pay for my heavy metal addiction…

A Swedish heavy metal fan has had his musical preferences officially classified as a disability. The results of a psychological analysis enable the metal lover to supplement his income with state benefits.
Roger Tullgren, 42, from Hässleholm in southern Sweden has just started working part time as a dishwasher at a local restaurant.
Because heavy metal dominates so many aspects of his life, the Employment Service has agreed to pay part of Tullgren’s salary. His new boss meanwhile has given him a special dispensation to play loud music at work.
“I have been trying for ten years to get this classified as a handicap,” Tullgren told The Local.
“I spoke to three psychologists and they finally agreed that I needed this to avoid being discriminated against.”
Roger Tullgren first developed an interest in heavy metal when his older brother came home with a Black Sabbath album in 1971.
Since then little else has mattered for the 42-year-old, who has long black hair, a collection of tattoos and wears skull and crossbones jewelry. (more...)

Phish — Returning to their roots

3650918606_248ffe96d8Mr. Miner’s Phish Thoughts:

One of the most glaring facets of this June’s tour was the succinctness of Phish’s jams.  Part of this can be attributed to feeling each other out again and getting used to jamming off each other again.  Yet, as the tour grew on, Phish continued to take more musical risks (Star Lake’s “Disease,” Deer Creek’s “Oceans > Drowned > Twist,” and Alpine’s “Crosseyed > Disease,” and “Piper”), but their jams remained tightly directed and based in rock textures.  After spending the years of 1997 to 2000 exploring many types of groove-based playing, and 2003 (’04) with looser, psychedelic jamming, it appears that Phish may be returning to their roots as progressive rock improvisers.
