Happy Birthday — Billie Holliday

billie-holidayArguably the greatest female jazz singer of all time, Billie is an artist that is often emulated, but no one comes close. She was born on this date in 1915. Here she is with “Traveling Light”:

Van Hagar vs. Roth Halen

2002_roth_hagar_vanhalen2It just wasn’t sinking into my 12 year old brain that David Lee Roth was leaving Van Halen. Why the heck would he want to do that? They’re replacing him with that guy that sings “I Can’t Drive 55″? Yuck! Although Van Halen did put out some decent albums with Hagar, they were worlds away from VH I, VHII, 1984, Diver Down, etc., etc. Don at GSBF shares his thoughts:

As part of the original “Youth Gone Wild” of 80’s, I was a devout fan of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock. As I got older I’d learn that there was a distinction between Heavy Metal and Hard Rock and ultimately other branch out genres such as Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Speed Metal, Stoner Metal, Glam Metal, Medium Alloy, etc, etc but that’s another story but not matter what kind of “metal” you were into, you were into Van Halen. Did You Know??

nat-king-coleThe most popular first dance song at U.S. weddings is Nat King Cole’s version of “Unforgettable”. Think of that as we enter wedding season. Here’s Nat singing the song on his television program from 1957:

Chicago — “25 or 6 to 4″

Featuring the late, great Terry Kath. From 1972.

“Cars Hiss By My Window”

4128This is truly one of my favorite late period Doors songs. It has always sounding like skid row blooze with an extra helping of melancholy. Jim Morrison had always wanted to master the blues harp, but never could get the feel for the damn thing. You’ll hear him in early Doors shows wailing away, but all that effort produces awful, out of tune bleats. At the conclusion of this 4th song from L.A. Woman, Jim mimics a Little Walter harmonica line with his voice and just nails it. It’s almost as good as the real thing, which leads me to the video we’re featuring here of YouTube user “Charliemusslewhite” layin’ it down with a an excellent rendition of this almost 40 year old song.

“The Star Spangled Banner”

american-flagHistory:

On September 3, 1814, Francis Scott Key and John Stuart Skinner, an American prisoner-exchange agent, set sail from Baltimore aboard the ship HMS Minden flying a flag of truce on a mission approved by President James Madison. Their objective was to secure the release of Dr. William Beanes, the elderly and popular town physician of Upper Marlboro, and a friend of Key’s who had been captured in his home. Beanes was accused of aiding the arrest of British soldiers. Key and Skinner boarded the British flagship HMS Tonnant on September 7 and spoke with Major General Robert Ross and Admiral Alexander Cochrane over dinner, while they discussed war plans. At first, Ross and Cochrane refused to release Beanes, but relented after Key and Skinner showed them letters written by wounded British prisoners praising Beanes and other Americans for their kind treatment. The Beatles to reissue remastered catalog

274-001the-beatles-postersYahoo:

Fresh off a headline-grabbing reunion, The Beatles are set to become the remasters of their own domain, with Apple Corps and EMI Music today announcing plans to release a digitally retooled version of the Fab Four’s catalog.
The worldwide release is set for Sept. 9, not so coincidentally the same day The Beatles: Rock Band video game is slated to come out.
Those who were fans back in the British boys’ heyday will be happy to hear that each album will come ready-made for nostalgia. The CDs will feature the replicated original U.K. album art, expanded booklets with original and new liner notes and rare band photos. For early adopters, CDs will also be embedded for a limited time with a documentary about the album’s production. (more…)

Happy Birthday — Billy Kreutzman

182749324_15a0cba40fDrummer and original Grateful Dead drummer Billy Kreutzmann turns 63 today. Billy was the Dead’s sole drummer until Mickey Hart joined the band in September 1967 and once again when Mickey left the band on sabbatical in 1971. Of course Mickey joined the band again in October of ’74 and shared drum duties with Billy until the band disbanded after Jerry’s death in August of ’95.  Click here to download the Billy Kreutzmann Trio (Billy, Scott Murawski, Oteil Burbridge) from Gathering Of The Vibes ’08.
