Papa Gene discusses the GWB, the future of Ween, the departure and reemergence of Claude Coleman. A good read. Athens Banner Herald:
Gene Ween (nee Aaron Freeman), one-half of the longstanding alt-rock institution known as Ween, is feeling fine these days, though it was touch-and-go just a few months ago for the 39-year-old Pennsylvania native.
Embarking on the inaugural tour with his new project, imaginatively called the Gene Ween Band, Ween came down with pneumonia in mid-December, making necessary the cancellation of a number of scheduled performances.
“It came from nowhere, and it was horrible,” Ween says during a recent interview from his Keystone State “studio in the woods.” “I actually spent a few days in the hospital, but now I’m fully recovered – I’m not sure how it happened. It could have been from exhaustion because I hadn’t played in a while. Let me tell you, it was awful.” (more…)
“Stand By Me” was originally penned by Ben E. King, who initially wrote the song for The Drifters, but recorded the song with Lieber and Stoller and released it in 1961, handling the vocals himself. The song peaked at #4 and was rereleased in 1986 to coincide with the classic coming of age movie, Stand By Me, based on Stephen King’s novella. In it’s rerelease, it peaked at #9.
In 2008, the documentary film, Playing for Change Foundation featured a composite medley of street singers from around the world singing and playing the song. The results are astounding and shown below.
Pink Floyd formally announced that troubled band member and acid casualty, Syd Barrett had left the band. Barrett’s bizarre behaviour had become increasingly erratic and unpredictable. Barrett died in 2006, after retiring to live in his mother’s home for 30+ years. He spent much of his time gardening and painting. Here’s Barrett as a member of the mighty Floyd with “Interstellar Overdrive”:
One of the most diverse classes in the history of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which included Metallica, Run-DMC, 1950s rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson and guitar legend Jeff Beck, were inducted into the Hall at a wild four-hour show Saturday night, April 4th. Held at Cleveland’s historic Public Hall, the event was open to the general public for the first time in the 23-year history of the Hall of Fame. The result was a show that felt more like an actual rock concert than any previous ceremony. (more…)
This is probably my favorite Gamehendge, it’s also a stellar SBD recording that catches a white-hot band, proving a point and making a case for being the tightest band around.
