The Band — “Time To Kill”

Excellent song from 1970′s Stage Fright.

Gathering Of The Vibes Broadcast tonight at 8

home_topAt 8pm EDT tonight GOTV will be having a live broadcast where they will share news on the festival and feature set recordings from past Vibes. Tonight they’re going to be announcing the final main stage line-up for ’09. Immediately following the announcement they’ll be pulling a set recording of the Masters of Bluegrass at Vibes ’04 from The Vault and airing it on the broadcast. Check it out here.

11 Years ago today…

apr_98_1hPhish embarked on their “Island Tour”, which began in Uniondale, NY and ended three nights later in Providence, RI. The band was hot off the heels from recording The Story Of The Ghost and were white-hot as the 2005 Live Phish releases of these shows document. Usually Phish is cast aside by traditional media outlets, but I found this review of the release by All About Jazz.

Its generic bootleg style front graphics camouflaging gorgeous stage shots on the inner sleeve (is that a man jumping on a trampoline?), the packaging of the latest release in the “Live Phish” series of archival recordings , Island Tour , may stand as an accurate metaphor for the misconceptions and preconceptions about the Vermont quartet. Diehards’ revere these recordings, available on-line at Phish Dry Goods or as downloads from Live Phish as a collective pinnacle of the band’s career and it’s simple to hear why.
Certainly as the flagship of the jamband scene as it evolved from the Nineties into the new millennium, Phish invited comparisons to the Grateful Dead, not only for their proclivity for extended improvisation, but also in terms of their fan base, which swelled coincidental to the death of Dead founder Jerry Garcia in 1995, and displayed the same obsession with the four musicians as Deadheads did for the object of their fascination. Yet a more appropriate compassion might exist between Phish and The Who. (more…)

RIP — Buddy Rich (1917-1987)

rich6Buddy Rich died on this date 1987. Here’s a MSD post on him from 11/27:

“Here’s the legendary Buddy Rich displaying his prowess on the skins. Buddy had been vaudevilian “wonder boy” drummer as a child and graduated to playing in some of the most celebrated big bands and swing bands in both pre and post WWII. He played behind Sinatra during his Dorsey days and the two had many a heated argument. Rich was almost as well known for his temper as his drumming. The Rich tapes are known in certain circles as a testament to his mercurial mood swings. A band member in Rich’s band snuck a tape recorder on to the tour bus and recorded several of his tirades. They’re good for a laugh and make you appreciate the fact that you don’t have an employer that treats you the way Rich treated those in his employ. You can hear them here. Jerry Seinfeld enjoyed working lines from the tapes into episodes of his television show.”

The Avett Brothers — “Will You Return”

Besides lacking in musical talent, I could never be in The Avett Brothers band. I’m just too damn claustrophobic. This is them “live from the bus”.

Peter Tosh — “Legalize It”

It was interesting reading in Clapton’s book about working with Tosh in the studio. Clapton stated in his book that Tosh would just be slumped in a chair, seemingly unconcious and would rise and play the “most brilliant” guitar licks. I could see that.

The Band — Washington, D.C. (8/16/76)

340x2Mid-August 1976 found the band members Robbie Robertson and Richard Manuel, tired and burned out of constant touring. Their legendary retirement shows, captured in “The Last Waltz” was but a mere three months away. This show finds them mustering their collective strength and flexing their musical muscle. Taken from a pre-FM recording.
