Van and Jim

georgerodriguez2Here’s a cool shot of two Morrisons with their respective bands, Them and The Doors. This shot was taken in the summer of ’66 at The Whiskey A-G0-Go in L.A. The Doors joined Them for an encore of Them’s classic “Gloria”. At this point, The Doors were the house band at The Whiskey-A-Go-Go, making $200 a week. Them was the hot band out of Belfast and on the rise. Van’s stage presence had quite the impact on the elder Morrison, Jim, as explained by John Densmore in his autobiography, Riders On The Storm.

“Jim Morrison learned quickly from his near namesake’s stagecraft, his apparent recklessness, his air of subdued menace, the way he would improvise poetry to a rock beat, even his habit of crouching down by the bass drum during instrumental breaks.” On the final night, the two Morrisons and the two bands jammed together on “Gloria”.

Phish — “Cities”

sspEverybody remembers their first favorite song right? Mine was “We Just Disagree” by Dave Mason back in the late ’70′s. Well, two of my closest friends had a child in ’98, in the wake of Phish’s Slip Stitch and Pass release. I can vividly remember her rocking and singing along in the back seat (in her baby seat, of course) to the opening track, “Cities”, especially the “there’s some good points, some bad points…” part. I think of her every time I hear the song, which is generally though of to be her first favorite song. Pretty good one, eh? Here’s Phish covering the Byrne penned Talking Heads classic “Cities” from 12/28/97:
