Funny Monday — Droid Rock

Not really funny, just kind of weird. This is from ’76, beating Star Wars by a year to the outer space, android phenomenon of the ’70′s.

Happy Birthday — Eric Clapton

eric-clapton-2Eric Patrick Clapton was born on this date in 1945. “Slowhand” has most recently played with the Allman Brothers, celebrating their 40th anniversary at the Beacon, reconnected with two old friends, Steve Winwood and Jeff Beck and is recording an album with Robbie Robertson. I thought I read in his 2007 biography that he was expecting to slow down. Guess not.

Here’s Clapton and Buddy Guy performing “Sweet Home Chicago”:

Nico — “The End”

Here’s Nico’s take on The Doors classic, “The End”. Nico and Jim were lovers in the summer of ’67, bonding to the point that she considered herself Jim’s “soul sister”. This hauting take features Nico’s Germanic vocal intonation and assistance from Brian Eno, John Cale and Phil Manazera.

Joel Cummins — The Mantis Monologues

Umphrey's McGee - Green Apple Music Festival - Washington D.C. - April 20, 2008Jambands.com:

Jambands.com continues with part three of a four-part series centered upon Umphrey’s McGee, and their impressive new studio album, Mantis. Part I focused on the thoughts of guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Jake Cinninger, who wrote much of the original material that found its way into the two-year process of recording the album. Part II gathered the musings of his bandmate, guitarist/lead vocalist/songwriter Brendan Bayliss, who discussed the production of the record, his lyrical content, and life on the road. We move onwards with the contributions of keyboardist Joel Cummins, as he digs into the details behind the record, the second decade of Umphrey’s, live work, and his numerous side projects in a wide open, pointed look at the modern improv landscape. Wilco reveals more details about new album

music_3-08_wilco_05Jambands.com:

The next studio effort from Wilco is still untitled and its release date is unconfirmed. However the band’s website has revealed the title of many songs that have been recorded for the disc (even if they may not make it onto the final product). These songs include: “Deeper Down,” “Conscript (aka I’ll Fight),” “One Wing,” “Solitaire,” “Wilco (the song),” “Country Disappeared,” “Everlasting,” “Bull Black Nova,” and “Sonny Feeling.” The site also confirms that Feist contributes lead vocals to the song “You and I.” The disc reportedly will hit in late June, with the band opening a spring tour on April 14 in Milwaukee at the Pabst Theatre. Meanwhile, frontman Jeff Tweedy is Northampton, MA tonight for a solo show at the Calvin Theatre.

Tortoise — “It’s All Around You”

From 12/11/07.

Ween — “Freedom Of ’76″

Some old school Ween here, back when it was just the two of ‘em. Oh and by the way, Mannequin was not filmed at Woolworth’s. It was filmed here. I remember the first time I heard Ween was on a cross country trip back in early ’95. The tape was Chocolate & Cheese and I was completely blown away by the range of styles employed by the brothers Ween. We must have listened to that tape 20 times during that trip. While in Montana, we passed this.

Crosby, Stills & Nash — “Southern Cross”

From the L.A. Universal Ampitheatre in 1982. Such an amazingly beautiful and soulful song. Wiki with a little info:

Crux (pronounced /ˈkrʌks/) is the smallest of the 88 modern constellations, but is one of the most distinctive. Its name is Latin for cross, and it is dominated by a cross-shaped asterism and is commonly known as the Southern Cross because it is today visible mostly from the southern hemisphere, although it is sometimes visible near the horizon in the northern hemisphere at tropical latitudes during the winter months. Crux is bordered by the constellations Centaurus, which surrounds it on three sides, and Musca.

The Lost Art of The Mixtape — Sirens

30 Years ago today…

ericpattie_468x354Eric Clapton married longtime girlfriend and George Harrison’s former wife, Pattie Boyd. Pattie was Clapton’s muse and inspiration for Derek & The Dominoes song “Layla” and much of the band’s excellent 1970 release, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. “Layla” was named for the 7th century Arabian poem, Layla and Majnun, which chronicled a princess (Layla) who was married off by her father to someone other than the one who was desperately in love with her, resulting in Majnun’s madness.

Here’s Clapton performing “Layla” with the Allman Brothers on 3/19/09 at The Beacon Theatre:

Steve Kimock Crazy Engine: A New Trip

gkJambase.com:

Recently, audience members who arrived at the Phish after-party shows at The NorVa in Norfolk, Virginia, were surprised to find that although the marquee outside said “Passion Presents: Steve Kimock and Friends,” it was actually the debut of Kimock’s highly-touted new band, Steve Kimock Crazy Engine.

“Well,” the guitarist says with a laugh, “they are my friends.”

The band used the two late night dates to test out the fresh relationships, some new material and a new production team before their national tour kicks off in late March (find tour dates here). Joining Kimock in Crazy Engine is master of the organ Melvin Seals (Jerry Garcia Band, JGB), bassist Janis Wallin (Family Groove Company), vocalists Cheryl Rucker and Shirley Starks, and Kimock’s son John Morgan Kimock on drums. The national tour will hit the West and East Coasts through most of April and end in New Orleans in early May. They are already on the bill for several summer festivals, including 10,000 Lakes, High Sierra, Wakarusa and All Good. (more…)
