Umphrey’s to play free show in wake of Langerado cancellation…

snc12318Umphrey’s McGee will play a free show in the wake of Langerado’s cancellation. The recession friendly gig will take place at the University of Miami’s University Center Patio on March 7 and no tickets will be required.

Clapton/Winwood confirm dates…

Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood will team of for a late spring and early summer arena tour. The former Blind Faith bandmates reunited last February for a three-show run at New York’s Madison Square Garden that mixed material from throughout the musicians’ careers. Clapton and Winwood were also featured on the cover of Relix last winter.

As of press time, Clapton and Winwood will kick off their tour at East Rutherford, NJ’s Izod Center on June 10. From there the tour will make stops in Philadelphia (6/12), Washington (6/13),Columbus, OH (6/15), Chicago (6/17), St. Paul, MN (6/18), Omaha, NE (6/20), Denver (6/21), Dallas (6/23), Houston (6/24),Glendale, AZ (6/26), Las Vegas (6/27), Oakland, CA (6/29) and Los Angeles (6/30). A DVD of the paired performers’ Madison Square Garden shows is also in the works. Clapton also kicked off his winter tour last night in Osaka, Japan.

Happy Birthday — Ray Manzarek

28Keyboardist for The Doors and eternal worshipper of the throne of St. James, Raymond Daniel Manzarek turns 70(!) today. An excellent and tasteful keyboard player, Manzarek has also been guilty of feeding the “Morrison Is Alive” myth, “Jim was Dionysus”, etc., etc.,  amongst other statements of pompousity in regards to The Doors. This has served the band well, as they remain a rite of passage for every rock loving teenager during their formative years and continue to sell 1 million+ albums a year. Unfortunately he and guitarist Robbie Krieger disagree with drummer John Densmore over the use of the band’s name. The remaining three could hardly stand to be in the same room with one another during the recent Sundance showing of When You’re Strange, the Oliver Stone-less documentary that’s set to be narrated by Johnny Depp. Here’s the trailer for said movie:
