Brendan Bayliss — The Mantis Monologues (interview)

um_022009_varietyplayhouse-atlantaga3Great interview conducted by Jambands.com:

With some artistic license regarding the use of the word “Monologues,” Jambands.com continues its series with the members of Umphrey’s McGee as they discuss the new Mantis album, its recording process, and life on and off the road during the second decade of the Chicago jamband. Part II features guitarist/vocalist Brendan Bayliss, who has always proved to be not only a perfect foil to his guitarist counterpart, Jake Cinninger, featured in Part I of our series, but an engaging lyricist and musician who helps unite the band and adds a resonating definition to its often exhilarating music. Bayliss is also candid and honest without ever losing the grounded sense of humor that appears to define his character as much as his skills as an expert artistic craftsman. (more…)

Perhaps Sly Stone has taken it ‘higher’ too many times…

43eaeac1-00150-02d61-400cb8e1I read this a while back and had meant to post it, as it was just too ludicrous to go unmentioned here. Hip/funkster or Funk/hipster Sly Stone’s Santa Rosa show back in October is just too, too far-out, whackadoo crazy, according to this account from Bohemian.com. Read on about Mr. Stone…

The insane circumstances surrounding Sly Stone’s bizarre appearance in Santa Rosa last Friday, Oct. 18, were told to me by several people involved with the show. Crazy doesn’t begin to describe it. Here’s how it went down.

The morning of the show, Sly Stone is in Los Angeles. He fires his business manager. Sly tells the promoter that he’s his own boss now, that he’s the one who’s going to get paid at the show, and that he needs $3,000 wired to the bank account of an Iranian BMW saleswoman before he’ll even get on the plane to San Francisco.

And about that plane: it was supposed to arrive from Los Angeles at 11:30am. No Sly. The limo waits at the airport. Sly’s next flight becomes 1:30pm, then 2:30pm, 3:30pm and 5:30pm. No one can get a hold of him at all. The promoter drives to the airport in the slim hope that Sly might walk through one of the gates. (more…)

The Beatles — Unreleased “Revolution” Track Surfaces (Take 20)

beatles-revolutionLoose, trippy and fun could be words that describe this previously unreleased track, recorded at Abbey Road during the White Album sessions (1968).

Popwatch:

According to Mark Lewisohn’s definitive book The Beatles: Recording Sessions, this unheard version was recorded on May 30 and 31, and June 4, 1968. Strangely, John Lennon recorded his vocals while lying flat on his back, hoping it might make his voice sound different. The song starts off very similar to the version that was eventually released, but halfway through it veers off in all sorts of strange directions, adding whooping vocals, tape loops, and other sonic embellishments. It sounded great, as you can hear above, but there was a problem: The band quickly realized “Revolution” had potential as a single, and a 10-minute running time would make that impossible. The solution? They chopped it in half. The first part became “Revolution 1,” while the rest served as the basis for the “Revolution 9,” an experimental noise-fest that has long baffled many fans. Mystery solved! When you listen to this complete 10-minute version, suddenly “Revolution 9″ starts to make a lot more sense. (more…)

Umphrey’s McGee in Atlanta (2/19/2009 – 2/20/09)

um_022009_varietyplayhouse-atlantaga26We caught UM’s shows in Atlanta on Thursday and Friday and I’ve gotta say, they didn’t disappoint and exceeded our insanely high expectations. The material covered was a diverse collection of fan favorites, jaw-dropping improvisation and an intense focus was placed on their newest release Mantis. The musical terrain covered, coupled with the perfectly balanced audio mix and lighting design of new lighting director, Jeff Waful, was top notch and showcase a professionalism fitting of a band of Umphrey’s creativity and talent. The future for this sextet from Chicago via South Bend is a bright and burns with a white hot intensity. There doesn’t seem to be much that this band can’t achieve. (All photos by Derek Martinez)

dsc_4352-copyOn a side note, we will be posting photos throughout the next few weeks of this leg of UM’s southern tour, taken by new friend, Derek Martinez.

Sunday Jazz — Grant Green

g-grantOne of our all-time favorite guitarists is Grant Green. Sadly, the man only made it to 44, but his recordings show a true guitar virtuoso, whose lines flutter and dance simultaneously with rhythym. His live recording, Live At The Lighthouse, is amazing from start to finish and are testament to the man’s brilliance.

Here he is with a brief guitar solo:

Once again with Kessel & Burrell:

And here is a previous post we did on GG.

Trey to join Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (5/21/09)

bso4Trey Anastasio will join Music Director Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for orchestrations of classic Phish tunes and the East Coast premiere of his composition Time Turns Elastic at 8p.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Tickets will be available through a real time pre sale beginning Thursday, February 19th at 5pm (EST) and ending Friday, February 27th at Noon (EST) at http://treytickets.rlc.net Tickets go on-sale to the public Saturday, February 28th at noon (EST). Audio taping tickets will not be sold for this event.

The first half of the program features classic Phish songs and solo Trey compositions, while second half of the program features the East Coast premiere of Time Turns Elastic, co-composed by Anastasio and long-time collaborator Don Hart. Time Turns Elastic is a groundbreaking work for vocals, electric guitar and orchestra with long, orchestral passages intertwined with epic guitar lines and vocals in the vein of such classic Anastasio compositions as The Divided Sky, Guyute and Fluffhead. With Anastasio’s electric guitar at the forefront, Time Turns Elastic pushes the limits of orchestral music and delivers a complete articulation of the Baltimore Symphony’s mission to present new musical collaborations that challenge and inspire audiences. “Most of the time when people use an electric instrument with an orchestra, they destroy the capability to blend,” notes Anastasio. “Our approach is to handle it as any other solo instrument. I play at the volume of say, an oboe, so Don can orchestrate around the guitar.”
