Did You Know??

cscerealcornmask01In John Lennon’s 1980 Playboy interview, he confessed that “Good Morning, Good Morning” from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was inspired by a 1967 Kellogg’s Corn Flakes commercial. This isn’t it, but here’s a 1960′s Corn Flakes commercial.

K-Dub rings in the new year with lotsa covers…

0317keller6From Jambands.com:

Keller Williams celebrated New Year’s Eve with a three-set performance at Hilton Head, SC’s Shoreline Ballroom. The evening opened with an “all request” set that featured favorites submitted by fans like “Cookies,” “Breathe,” “Cadillac,” the Grateful Dead’s “Bird Song,” Phish’s “Scent of a Mule,” The Beatles’ “Rocky Raccoon” and Sublime’s “What I Got.” Williams also played piano on the thematically-appropriate “Play This.” After a short break, Williams returned to the stage for a set of “Grunge Grass” with Claude Arthur (bass) and Jay Sterling (dobro). The three musicians offered bluegrass versions of a number of alt-rock favorites, including Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come as You Are,” “Lithium,” “In Bloom” and “All Apologies,” Pearl Jam’s “Black” “Alive” and “Jeremy,” Offspring’s “Self Esteem,” Radiohead’s “Creep” and Stone Temple Pilots’ “Plush,” among others.

Williams returned by himself for his third set at 11:45 PM and charged into a version of “Get on Down” that led into an onstage New Year’s countdown, a balloon drop and, of course, a version of “Auld Lang Syne.” The guitarist remained in a festive mood for the rest of his set, offering favorites like “Celebrate Your Youth,” Paul Simon’s “Late in the Evening,”, a reggae version of “Freekshow” and “Alligator Alley,” the latter of which references the alligators of Hilton Head. At one point, Williams even took a shot of alcohol from the stage. In addition, Arthur and Sterling returned to the stage covers of the Grateful Dead’s “Help on the Way” and “Franklin’s Tower.

40 Years Ago Today…

iowhendrixlThe Jimi Hendrix Experience performed on “It’s Lulu’s” and started into “Hey Joe”, but then abruptly morphed into Cream’s “Sunshine Of Your Love” as an homage to the power trio that had split days prior. Clapton and Hendrix were very close friends. Very cool relic.

Musical Stew is really back now…

msd-mahogany-85x11-printA combination of the holidays, travel, illness and commitments have significantly hampered our ability to update the site as much as we normally do, so this is just a brief explanation why we haven’t been around as much. It’s now truly business as usual at MSD and we appreciate you, our reader for checking us out. On a side note, Jambands.com/Relix named us “Fan Site Of The Month”. Pretty cool, huh? Anyway, happy new year everyone and may this be a happy, healthy and peaceful one.  Bring on Phish in March!

-Matt and Kelly
