Umphrey’s McGee — Mantis

um4Reuters.com:

Progressive jam band Umphrey’s McGee is capturing the attention of the music industry with the pre-order campaign for its upcoming album.

Such strategies are nothing new, and many offer an incentive to buyers — a free download of the first single or access to early ticket sales for concerts. But Umphrey’s McGee has gone to far greater lengths for its January 20 release “Mantis,” which the Chicago-based band hopes will bring it mainstream success after 11 years building a nationwide base of loyal supporters.

The group has a variety of content that it’s making available to anyone ordering the album now, including digital singles, rare live performances, behind-the-scenes video footage and photos. But in an innovative twist, the band is not releasing it all at once. Instead it’s releasing tiers of content based on how many pre-orders are sold. Each time the number of pre-orders reaches a certain threshold, a new tier of content is released. (There are nine tiers in all.) The idea is to engage diehard fans as evangelists who will convince their friends and family to pre-order “Mantis” so the next tier of content can become available. (more…)

Happy Birthday — Gregg Allman

gregg-allmanWe’d like to wish a very happy 61st to Gregory Lenoir Allman, keyboardist, vocalist and sometime guitarist for the Allman Brothers. Married six times, releasing several solo albums and 20+ Allman Bros. albums, Gregg has lived the rock star lifestyle.

Here’s the band at The Fillmore East playing “Whipping Post”:

Ween — “It’s Pat”

Happy Birthday — Jim Morrison (1943-1971)

jimmorrison19701Love ‘em? Hate ‘em? Indifferent to him? Whatever the case, there’s no denying his impact on rock music and the lead singer role. Morrison’s long suffering Naval father passed away recently (read here about it), leaving the Morrison estate in the hands of Jim’s brother and sister and Morrison’s “cosmic mate’s” (Pamela Courson, d.1974) parents. Jim would’ve been 66 today, although he only made it to 27, dying in Paris in ’71 and there will be a celebration at one of his L.A. haunts, Barney’s Beanery. Apparently Morrison was banished from the establishment after urinating on the bar. A plaque will be placed in honor of the occassion by Dave Houston (owner of Barney’s Beanery) at the destination of Mr. Mojo’s dribble.  If you can’t make it to Barney’s tonight, perhaps you can celebrate by watching one of our carefully chosen videos below.
