Bob Dylan’s Letter To Jerry Garcia
We linked this article the other day, but didn’t mention this artifact. We found this letter that Dylan wrote to Jerry Garcia very interesting. It’s valued at $45,000 at auction. More info:
Dylan was looking for guest artists for a Jimmie Rodgers tribute alum when he dashed off a note to his longtime friend Jerry Garcia. Dylan asked if Garcia would do some yodeling on the album. “You don’t have to yodel, but if you want to yodel, that’s OK too…anyway, if it’s not too much to ask, think about a Jimmie song…whatever you decide is ok with me.” Garcia reportedly read the letter backstage at a Dead show before giving it to a tech. With a weakened voice and ill health, Garcia did a session for the tribute album. Two weeks later he died. “Given its connection to Jerry’s last recording session i would say it’s a very important item,” said Grateful Dead historian and author Dennis McNally. “I don’t know pen-and-ink letters Dylan has written to anyone or to Jerry but I cant believe there’s been many.”
Phish — In studio photo surfaces (NYC)
The members of Phish are rumored to be rehearsing at an undisclosed New York location this week. Like many Phish related events, rumors began circulating online last week and were furthered when Mike Gordon and Page McConnell attended photographer Jay Blakesberg’s New York book signing Monday. Gordon was also spotted at the final night of Phil Lesh’s Nokia residency Tuesday. Perhaps the most definitive proof arrived today when an image of Phish rehearsing in a Brooklyn studio hit the web. Though the photograph’s author is unknown, the shot is believed to be real. Phish’s decision to rehearse in New York is a major shift for a group that almost exclusively rehearsed in Trey Anastasio’s famed barn/studio throughout its later years.
Guns N’ Roses — Chinese Democracy
RS:
A pair of much-anticipated albums are currently streaming in their entirety over at MySpace Music. Even though it leaked to the Internet this week, anybody still doubting the existence of Guns N’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy can check out the aural proof, as Axl Rose’s complete opus is up on the music site. We recommend you all rush over there and give it a listen, as Axl still has 96 hours to decide he doesn’t want to release it for another decade. The Fireman — Paul McCartney’s electronic collaboration with producer Youth — also has their entire album available for streaming at their brand new MySpace page. The Fireman’s album Electric Agruments is due out November 25th.
Fleet Foxes interview
I met two of the members of Fleet Foxes– lead vocalist Robin Pecknold and drummer/vocalist Josh Tillman– in the Black Cat bar before their Washington, D.C. show, while minglers were downing Blue Moons and Yuenglings as the jukebox blared the Ramones. As we made our way through the crowd to find a quiet place for an interview, Pecknold was stopped by a family– a woman and what appeared to be her college-age children– who all congratulated him and told him how much they love the band. It was typical fan small talk, until they mentioned they had seen part of the Fleet Foxes set at the Sub Pop 20th Anniversary Festival back in July. When they asked him to sign their tickets, he said, “Of course” and began patting the pockets of his enormous red coat for a pen. (more…)
35 Years Ago Today…
Every rock musician/fan’s dream came true on this night in 1973 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Keith Moon was playing from his drum riser, when the effects of his horse tranquilizer laced cocktail kicked in. Moon promptly passed out cold, leaving the band drummer-less. Rather than cancel the show, The Who soldiered on with a replacement drummer. It just so happens that in the audience there was a drummer in the audience, Scott Halpin, whose friends volunteered his services. Actually he hadn’t played drums in over a year and was a bit rusty. The band accepted and blasted through three songs before Moon joined them back on stage. Interviewed by Rolling Stone, Halpin admired The Who’s stamina, admitting “I only played three numbers and I was dead.”
Here’s Halpin playing with The Who:
Happy Birthday — Murphy
We’d like to take a moment to wish our middle dog-child, Murphy Andrews, a very happy first birthday. Murphy was the baby of the family until we went and added another puppy, Maizy, to the mix. Murphy turns 1 today and likes walks on the beach, eating, and looking up to his big brother, Sam.
Here’s Murphy attacking his reflection in his younger days with his older brother, Sam:
Happy Birthday — Duane Allman
Of course, Duane’s not with us, but if he were, he’d be celebrating his 62nd birthday today. Happy B-day Sky-Dog! Check out some of our previous Duane Allman posts here.
