Phish — “Ha-Ha-Ha” –> “Harry Hood”

m35761-41Or just as easily could be called “Crunch Rock” –> “Bliss”. Played here exactly 13 years and one day ago, Ha Ha Ha debuted at the 5/16/1995 Lowell, MA Voters Choice Benefit (remember Gloria Steinem’s intro?) and has been nothing more than a 2-3 minute song that rarely made its way on to setlists– but it’s an oddly endearing song. The song is kind of a one, well maybe two trick pony. With a molten guitar lick and some sarcastic group laughing, it’s certainly one of the more bizarre songs within the Phish canon. The version below is taken from Phish’s 11/16/1995 show in West Palm Beach, which had Butch Trucks join the band for “Possum” and none other than Jimmy Buffett joined the band for a version of (puke, vomit) “Brown-Eyed Girl”.

Which get us to Harry Hood, well we’ll get to that another time.

41 Years Ago Today…

hellogoodbyebeatlesThe Beatles recorded “I Am The Walrus” at Abbey Road Studios. It proved to be the B-Side of “Hello Goodbye”, to me that’s like Jerry Remy to the plate when you have Jim Rice. The song has a very interesting genesis and back story. Wiki:

Lennon composed the avant-garde song by combining three songs he had been working on. When he learned that a teacher at his old primary school was having his students analyze Beatles’ lyrics, he added a verse of nonsense words.[3] Music critic Ian MacDonald argued that the song was Lennon’s “final creative high water mark” with the Beatles.

The walrus is a reference to the walrus in Lewis Carroll‘s “The Walrus and the Carpenter” (from the book Through the Looking-Glass). Lennon expressed dismay upon learning that the walrus was the villain in the poem. (more…)

Here is the music video they made for the track:

Ladies and Gentlmen, we have a winner…

ph90combo12The winner of the first Musical Stew Daily contest is none other than Jason Chimelewski of New Albany, IN. Jason won a copy of the 8 CD set of Phish’s “At The Roxy” release, documenting the band’s historic Roxy run of 1993. I have heard this set and whoa! This box set smokes from beginning to end. These were my first shows and to hear them in all of their remastered glory is truly something to behold. The street date for this set is tomorrow (11/18). Congratulations Jason!

To be entered in future contests, sign up for our newsletter, we’ll send you the newsletter and fill out the very brief questionnaire and get it back to us. It’s super easy to do, so do it!
