Did You Know??
The first song to feature electric guitar distortion was Marty Robbins’ song “Don’t Worry” in 1961. It was accidental–the amplifier malfunctioned. (Check the 1:30 mark.)
Eric Clapton — “Sign Language”
In Clapton’s autobiography Clapton, he talks of this Bob Dylan penned song and his penchant for the lyrics. Apparently Bob wrote the song in one brief sitting and offered it to Eric. It was recorded at the legendary Shangri-La studio featured in The Last Waltz and featured on Eric’s 1978 release No Reason To Cry.

Bob Dylan — “Idiot Wind”
If a more searing, more personal song exists, I haven’t heard it. This song came (I had the iPod on shuffle) this morning as I was driving into work. I had thought 15 years or so ago that it was necessary to memorize every last lyric and grunt of the song because it was Dylan’s most personal and poignant work. Taken from arguably one of the greatest albums of all time, Blood On The Tracks, no song exists with more literary merit and poetic lyrics period. Sheer curiosity brought me to search the interwebs for once and for all the true meaning behind this song. I found Matt Phillips’ piece to be interesting:
Idiot Wind, however, is neither pathetic nor facetious – it is the song of a man seriously confronting himself and unearthing the anger, just as Don’t Think Twice, It’s alright found “I” discovering the strength within him to move on. The narrator in this song is for the most part curiously enraged, and Dylan‘s charred and soaring vocals evoke the howling of a man into the teeth of a gale, just as Shakespeare‘s Lear on the blasted heath roared his angry lament. In The Freewheelin‘ cover-notes, Dylan says of Masters of War ‘I don‘t sing songs which hope people will die…‘; the “I” of this song tells us “One day you‘ll be in the ditch, flies buzzing around your eyes…” But then Idiot Wind is as tangled a web as any song that this poet has ever woven.
