RIP — Bill Graham (1931-1991)
Legendary concert promoter, Bill Graham died in a helicopter crash on this date, 17 years ago. Graham wore many different hats, receiving a broze star in the Korean war, managing the Jefferson Airplane, owning the Fillmore’s East and West and being one of the main influences on the San Francisco music scene of the 60′s through the 80′s. Bill’s favorite band was the Grateful Dead and he coined the phrase, “The Grateful Dead aren’t the best at what they do; they are the only ones that do what they do”. He died, sadly, after attending a Huey Lewis concert, when his helicopter struck a 223 volt tower shortly after take off.
