Beastie Boys — Sabotage

Great live version here from the boys from the boroughs of NYC. Originally released on their excellent album from 1994, Ill Communication. I’ve also added the classic Spike Jonze shot video.

Phish — Buried Alive-> Down With Disease

Starting with the band’s chess move (remember those days?) then opening with the frenetic pace of “Buried Alive” and gliding into the bass thump of “Down With Disease” and its splendor. Here’s Phish at Hershey Park in Hershey, PA (12/1/1995):

Jeff Porcaro — “Bizarre Gardening Accident”

In a story that would seem to be straight out of This Is Spinal Tap, drummer Jeff Porcaro, who played with Toto, Clapton, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, etc., etc., died as a result of inhaling pesticide while tending to his garden. Apparently Jeff had an undiagnosed heart condition coupled with years of indulgence that made his heart considerably weaker than that of a normal 38 year old man (Jeff’s age at death). A sad and “bizarre” ending to a great and very well respected time keeper. Here’s the infamous clip from This Is Spinal Tap where they discuss the “drummer problem”.

And here’s Toto performing “Africa” live in 1982:

Another video for ya of Umphrey’s performing “Africa”:

Happy Anniversary To Us!

On a bit of a personal note, Kelly and I are celebrating our one year wedding anniversary today. It has been a great year for us and we look forward to many more. And thanks for checking out Musical Stew Daily!

Phish — Hampton Show Simulcast Petition

Shut out by TIcketmaster? No luck with lottery tickets? Well, perhaps you can see Phish when they return March 6, 7 and 8th through a simulcast showing of the concerts. Click here to sign a petition to show Phish management that there is ample demand for a simulcast. Here’s the letter that will be submitted to Red Light Management:

Dear Phish and Red Light Management,
This morning, 10/18/08, thousands of Phish phans got shut out of tickets by ticketmaster. Please sign a deal to simulcast at theaters and/or other arenas, your March 6th comeback performance or the whole Hampton run. There are a lot of folks that have supported you guys for many years and should be a part of this landmark show. Just because they couldn’t enter a security check faster than others shouldn’t mean that they can’t enjoy these shows. I believe this would not only benefit the phans but would also help the city of Hampton by not having thousands of ticketless phans descending upon Hampton that weekend. We all want to share in the groove, so please make this happen!

Funny Monday — Mitch Hedberg

Here’s one of our favorite comedians – Mitch Hedberg.  He had a big following, but still suffered from such severe stage fright that he’d often perform with his eyes closed or with his back to the audience.

Those of you watching this in Atlanta might recognize his voice, as Mitch was the voice of the Atlanta Thrashers ad campaign in 2002 and 2003.

31 Years Ago Today…

Three members of Lynyrd Skynyrd (Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines & Cassie Gaines) were killed in a fiery plane crash in Gilsburg, MI. Out of respect, their new release at the time, Street Survivors, was re-released without the initial artwork that had the band engulfed in flames. The CD has since been re-released with the flames intact.
