S-P-O-O-K-Y Friday — Vampire Sighting?

If you view our site regularly, you know that on Mondays and Fridays we post a funny clip and call it Funny Monday or Funny Friday. Well, today is Halloween and we thought it would be appropriate to post a scary clip, so strap in and watch this vampire sighting.

Bruce Springsteen — A Ghoulish Treat

From Bruce:

As a ghoulish Halloween treat to loyal fans, Bruce Springsteen is offering a free audio download and streaming peek at the video for the previously unheard track “A Night with the Jersey Devil” on his website, www.brucespringsteen.net . Both audio and video will be available on the site from 12:01am Friday, October 31 until 11:59pm Sunday, November 2.  The creepy video for “A Night with the Jersey Devil” was directed by long-time Springsteen visual-collaborator Thom Zimny.

Springsteen posted the following note on brucespringsteen.net:

“Dear Friends and Fans,

If you grew up in Central or South Jersey you grew up with the ‘Jersey Devil’.  Here’s a little musical Halloween treat.  Have fun!

Bruce Springsteen”

Happy Halloween!

Umphrey’s McGee — “Let The Wild Games Begin…”

From Jambands.com:

Umphrey’s McGee guitarist Jake Cinninger will take command of the Sirius Jam On airwaves on Halloween. Cinninger will DJ at the station from 6 PM through 12 AM EST this Friday, offering “his favorite tricks and treats, like some live Umphrey’s McGee and other favorites.” In addition, the guitarist promises to play some of his favorite vinyl records from the ‘70s.

Last night, Umphrey’s McGee got into the Halloween spirit a bit earlier teasing an incredible number of songs at San Diego, CA’s House of Blues. Throughout the night, the sextet teased no less than Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon,” Pink Floyd’s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” and Phish’s “Bathtub Gin,” as well as Led Zeppelin’s “Over the Hills,” “Kashmir” and “The Ocean.” The group also offered a creative mashup of Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” and Herbie Hancock’s “The Trailer.” Umphrey’s McGee will officially celebrate Halloween at San Francisco’s The Warfield this Friday.

Phish — Happy Halloween (Musical Costume Years: 1994, 1995, 1996 & 1998)

Does anyone miss the good old days when we could bank on Phish playing a Halloween show, displaying their chops and their take on a legendary album? Well, I do. Maybe ’09 will bring us another musical costume. Time will tell and we shall see. If they do play another Halloween show, what album would you like to see them cover? Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti? Frank Zappa’s Joe’s Garage? Neutral Milk Hotel’s In An Aeroplane Over The Sea? Leave us a comment with your desired album.

We’ve decided to put together some videos of Halloween’s past. Here they are in 1994 playing “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”:

Happy Birthday — King Ad Rock

We’d like to wish King Ad-Rock (AKA Adam Horovitz) of The Beastie Boys a very happy 42nd(!) birthday.

Suckas they’ve been saying they could take out Adam Horovitz.

Black Sabbath — Embrace The Darkness

Getting into the Halloween spirit, I thought to myself, “hmmm, who is the most wicked, evil and rockin’ band?”. The answer was invariably Black Sabbath (the original with Ozzy) back in their early days. The prince of darkness’ reign of evil has been diminished a little after watching him on his family’s reality show, but who hasn’t banged their head a little to some Sabbath? So without further adieu, here they are….Black Sabbath.

“Paranoid”:

“War Pigs” live in 1970:

And for good measure, here’s “Suicide Solution” with Randy Rhodes:

Jackson 5 — Reuniting?

New York Times:

The Jackson 5, above in 1976, will be getting back together, not in a court of law, at an intervention or on the set of Jerry Springer, but in a series of concerts, Jermaine Jackson said, according to Agence France-Presse. At an event for the Multi Channel Network in Sydney, Australia, Mr. Jackson, the third-oldest sibling, said that the R&B family would reunite next year for a world tour that would include his superstar brother, Michael, as well as his younger sister Janet. “This has been a long time coming for the Jackson family to get back together,” Mr. Jackson said, according to the news agency. “It is just the timing, so what we’ve been doing is working on the music and all the logistics.” No tour dates have been announced.

Happy Birthday — Grace Slick

Lead singer of The Great Society, Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, etc., etc. is 69(!) years young today. She was one of the most important vocalists and personalities of the psychedelic rock era of the late 1960s. Here she is with Jefferson Airplane performing “White Rabbit”:

Page McConnell — The Art Of Improvisation

From Jambands.com:

As some longtime Phish fans may remember, Page McConnell’s senior study at Goddard was titled The Art of Improvisation. While bandmate Trey Anastasio’s thesis, The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday saga is widely circulated, for many years McConnell’s study has been hard to find. However, the re-invigorated Phish.net recently located the document on Google groups and has made it available to fans looking for their fix before Hampton. Please click here if you wish to read McConnell’s thoughts on the art of improvisation.

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings — “Let Them Knock”

Augusta, Georgia native, Sharon Jones has ALL the moves – and a helluva voice to boot. Exuding more confidence than Mick Jagger and more energy than Madonna, this woman really brings it. The Dap Kings ain’t too shabby themselves either. Watch her turn it out in a live performance from French television of “Let Them Knock”:

moe. — “Shoot First”

moe.’s “Shoot First” played on wax phonographic cylinder. I thought this was pretty cool.

Led Zeppelin — L.A. Times Take On Sans Plant Zep

Zeppelin without Plant and John Bonham? How about Crosby, Stills & Watson? Or The Doors without Morrison? Or The Beatles featuring McCartney and Ringo (w/o Lennon and Harrison)? It just isn’t the same. The Los Angeles Times’ Todd Martens offers some helpful hints to a Percy-less Zep:

Led Zeppelin, apparently, is mulling a new album and a tour, but without its defining vocalist, Robert Plant. Giving some heft to longstanding rumors, bassist John Paul Jones was quoted on a BBC Radio report as revealing that the band has been auditioning lead singers. Maybe Leona Lewis is booked.

But despite the BBC’s defining headline of “Zeppelin to go back on the road,” nothing appears imminent.

“It’s got to be right. There’s no point in just finding another Robert,” Jones said, adding, “You could get that out of a tribute band, but we don’t want to be our own tribute band. … There would be a record and a tour, but everyone has to be on board.”

Wired’s Listening Post beat Pop & Hiss to asking readers if it’s Zeppelin without Plant, but no bother. The answer is no — credit Jones for already acknowledging the dreaded “tribute band” tag. But because there’s no new Plant-less Zeppelin music to discuss at the moment, here’s five ways to help ensure that Led Zep 2.0 has a fighting chance at working.

1. Don’t get anyone who sounds like Plant. Not only are the man’s vocals instantly recognizable, but any singer who’s even remotely similar is going to veer the project straight into tribute band territory. For the new project to work, it needs to be a complete band, not just the leftover Zep members recording music with someone who kinda-sorta sounds like Plant. (Continue Reading…)
