Umphrey’s McGee — My Kind Of Town (Chicago Is)

From Umphreys.com:

For the past eight years, Umphrey’s McGee has celebrated the final days of December in our hometown of Chicago, ringing in the New Year with a run of concerts at some of the city’s finest venues.

The tradition continues in 2008 as we host three nights to celebrate the end of yet another year, ushering in the next. The band will perform December 29th, 30th, and 31st at the visually stunning and acoustically perfect Auditorium Theatre, in the heart of downtown Chicago. Since 1889, this historic 3,700-seat theatre has been graced with the performances of many legendary artists. It is our honor and pleasure to bring the Umphrey’s McGee extended family to this wonderful establishment for three not-to-be missed events. Led Zeppelin Meet The King

I remember reading about this in Stephen Davis’ Hammer Of The Gods, back in the late 80′s. Well, here’s a little more info:

On May 11, 1974, Led Zeppelin attended (Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Bonham) Elvis Presley’s evening concert at the Los Angeles Forum. During the concert, Elvis stopped a song and jokingly said: ‘Wait a minute… If we can start together fellas, because we’ve got Led Zeppelin out there… let’s try to look like we know what we’re doing, whether we do or not’.

Their mutual promoter at the time, Jerry Weintraub, took Jimmy Page and Robert Plant up to Presley’s Las Vegas hotel suite. For the first few minutes, Elvis ignored them.

Jimmy Page—who had first picked up a guitar after hearing ‘Baby Let’s Play House‘ on overseas radio—began to fidget. What was going on? Did he really want to meet them? Should they say something? Elvis finally turned to them. ‘Is it true’, he said, ‘these stories about you boys on the road?’ Plant answered, ‘Of course not. We’re family men. I get the most pleasure out of walking the hotel corridors, singing your songs’. Plant offered his best Elvis impersonation. ‘Treat me like a fool, treat me mean and cruuuuel, but looooove me…’. For a moment Elvis Presley eyed them both very carefully. Then he burst out laughing. Then his bodyguards burst out laughing. For two hours he entertained them in his suite. He had never heard their records, he said, except for when his stepbrother played him ‘Stairway to Heaven’. ‘I liked it’, said Presley.

Kanye West — Busted At LAX

Kanye West, no fan of Bonnaroo, was busted today at LAX for vandalism.

TMZ:

Kanye West has just been arrested at LAX for felony vandalism.

A still photographer was trying to take pics of Kanye at the American Airlines terminal. According to our guy on the scene, Kanye allegedly confronted the photog and smashed his camera to the ground.

Our photog then began videotaping the scene when Kanye’s assistant grabbed our camera — a struggle ensued and the assistant threw the video camera to the ground, breaking it.

When Kanye realized our camera guy had videotaped the incident, he rushed our guy and yelled, “Gimme that f**king tape!”

Both Kanye and his assistant have been arrested and will be booked.

It needs more cowbell

Here’s a fun little gadget based on one of my favorite SNL skits, which featured Christopher Walken (you can see the full skit here).  Seriously, it never fails to make me laugh.

Well, now you can add more cowbell to any song by uploading it here!

We’d love to know what songs you’d like to hear with more cowbell.  Leave us a comment with your suggestions!

And here is background information about the skit.

RIP — Peter Tosh (1944-1987)

Peter Tosh, whose guitar and singing style has yet to be duplicated, but is often imitated, was killed on this day 21 years ago. Armed men entered his home and attempted to rob him at gunpoint. Wiki has more:

on September 11, 1987, just after Tosh had returned to his home in Jamaica, a three-man gang came to his house demanding money. Tosh replied that he did not have any with him but the gang did not believe him. They stayed at his residence for several hours in an attempt to extort money from Peter. During this time many of Tosh’s friends came to his house to greet him following his return to Jamaica. As people began to arrive, the gunmen became more and more frustrated. Especially the leader of the gang, Dennis ‘Leppo’ Lobban, a man whom Peter had befriended and tried to help find work after a long jail sentence. Peter must have been disgusted by this turn of events and made it very clear that he would never give them what they came for. Upon realizing that they would not get anything from the robbery, the gangs leader put a gun to Peter’s head and fired twice killing him instantly. The other gunmen began shooting, wounding several others and killing disc jockey Jeff “Free I” Dixon. Leppo turned himself over to the authorities, and was tried and convicted in the shortest jury deliberation in Jamaican history: eleven minutes.

Here’s his “Equal Rights” demo.

And here he is performing “Steppin’ Razor” in 1979:
