Smashing Pumpkins — Tonight, Tonight
The Smashing Pumpkins video for “Tonight, Tonight” was inspired by George Meillies 1902 silent film, A Trip To The Moon. The song was released on their album, Melon Collie And The Infinite Sadness. Here’s some info from Wiki:
The video, which debuted in May 1996, begins with a group of people celebrating the launch of a zeppelin to the moon. Tom Kenny’s character kisses Jill Talley’s character’s hand as the two enter the zeppelin, which is lifted off the ground by people dressed as sailors using rope and a pulley. The zeppelin approaches the Moon, which has a face like the Moon’s face in A Trip to the Moon. Shots of the band performing in similar, turn-of-the-century attire using older, acoustic instruments are interspersed. The two characters jump off the zeppelin and fall on the Moon’s surface. Suddenly, several hostile humanoid aliens appear, surrounding the couple. Jill Talley’s character defends herself by hitting a few of creatures with her umbrella, which vaporizes them, but the two are trapped and tied. The two form a plan, and then break free of the ropes and attack the aliens with their umbrellas. The couple escapes on a rocket similar to the one in A Trip to the Moon and land in the sea, where a merman sends them back to the surface in a bubble.
I just noticed something on watching the video again. The boat is name the “S.S. Mellies”. Mellies was the director of “A Trip To The Moon”.

Well, not really assaulted, but pushed. Happened in Toronto last night:
MTV — Video Music Awards ’08
Perhaps I’m not hip enough, maybe I’m a little older than the intended demographic, but I found last night’s (what I watched of it) VMAs incredibly lame. That Russell Brand guy was just atrocious. A whole lot of boring if you ask me, although I thought Kanye’s song at the end was okay. Here’s Billboard‘s take:
Britney Spears returned to the MTV Video Music Awards in a major way tonight (Sept. 7) in Los Angeles, getting the last laugh after a disastrous 2007 appearance by winning the first three awards of her career: female video, pop video and video of the year for “Piece of Me.”
Spears was the talk of the 2007 VMAs for all the wrong reasons following her lethargic performance of “Gimme More” as part of the opening segment. But she was a picture of professionalism and poise this time around, as she introduced the show and appeared in a comedic pre-show sketch with actor Jonah Hill. She also guested in several promo ads with host Russell Brand. Continue Reading (if you aren’t bored enough already)…
Keller Williams — One Man Jam
From the Asbury Park Press:
Keller Williams is embracing the band concept. He leads the WMDs and his upcoming album, “Live,” features Williams with WMDs guitarist Gibb Droll, bassist Keith Mosely and drummer Jeff Sipe.
The “one-man jam band” still knows how to kick it solo, though. Williams will be performing by his lonesome when he returns Saturday to The Stone Pony before going on a WMDs tour.
“As much as I enjoy sharing the stage, I still love going up there by myself,” Williams said while calling from his Fredericksburg, Va., home. “I’ve done it for years. I can’t stop now.” Continue Reading….
