Phish — 5 Versions of “Free”

Pop in Phish’s “Billy Breathes” album and press play. In “Free”, the opening track, you are transported to a floating blimp as you swim weightlessly in the womb and bounce gently around the room– in a moment you’ll be free and we’ll all be splashing in the sea. Sounds like fun, huh? This is just one of the many epic journey’s you’ll take on the album, but we’re focusing on “Free” for now. I’ll let Mr. Miner’s Phish Thoughts take it from here:

Debuted at the classic Lowell 5.16.95 show, with an assortment of new material, “Free” grew from a song many fans were initially skeptical about into a fan favorite over the course of a few years.  Using metaphor to describe birth, its earliest incarnations featured Page-led piano based jams, with the band diving into soupy and often amorphous textures (Check out SPAC 6.26.95, Jones Beach 6.29.95).  The addition of Trey’s mini drum kit in Fall ‘95 took the guitar out of the mix, and the jam seemed to lose direction at times, but it was working its way into the regular rotation.  When a reworked studio version appeared on 1996’s, Billy Breathes, it had lead guitar lines not previously played.  This new format helped transform the song when Phish shifted towards funk in 1997, taking on a whole new character and danceability.  Featuring a crowd rousing Mike bomb section followed by a Trey led group jam, It continued to be a staple until the end.  Below are five of my favorite Free’s- I’m not trying to argue them as the “top 5″- just five I love.  Read a mini-review and listen to each standout version of the song, or download all five versions below.

Wilco — New Album Spring ’09

Billboard‘s got the skinny:

Wilco hopes to have its seventh studio album out by spring 2009, frontman Jeff Tweedy told Albany, N.Y., radio station WAMC recently.

After opting for a highly performance-oriented recording approach on 2007′s “Sky Blue Sky,” Tweedy says he expects Wilco will “allow ourselves a little bit more leeway in terms of sculpting the sound in the studio and doing overdubs and using the studio as another instrument. Last time around, it was more of a document.”

At recent live shows, Wilco has played two new songs: “One Wing” recalls the melancholy, slowly building “Sky Blue Sky” closer “On and On and On,” while “Sunny Feeling” has a sly main riff in keeping with loose jams from the last album such as “Walken.” Continue reading….

Trey Anastasio — Tribute LeRoi Moore

Posted on Phish.com:

When Phish played Virginia Beach in 1997, LeRoi came on stage and started playing three saxophones at once and set off the most hilarious chain of events. Within minutes Page was playing four of his keyboards with his hands and feet and I had three guitars on and drumsticks in my hand banging on Fish’s drums. and Mike was playing two basses. It was just a phenomenal moment! And I remember LeRoi laughing with his mouth full of saxophones.

We miss you LeRoi and thank you for the joy you brought all of us.

Dave Matthews Band — Show Goes On At Staples Center

Last night at The Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA, the Dave Matthews Band took the stage in honor of their fallen band mate and Dave Matthews Band founding member, LeRoi Moore, who had died a few hours earlier.
