RIP LeRoi. You will be sorely missed.

Stevie Ray Vaughn — 6/19/1985

Texas blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn providing serious heat on this SBD. These were the days when Stevie was dissolving cocaine in his whiskey for his morning “pick me up”, but the music was never better. Recorded in Morrison, CO — not too far from where the wife and I honeymooned last year.

John Lennon Killer Parole Tapes Released

On Tuesday, parole officials released the transcripts of John Lennon‘s killer Mark David Chapman‘s latest hearing.

Chapman reportedly told parole officials during his latest unsuccessful bid for release that he is ashamed and sorry for gunning down the former Beatle and that, over the years, he has come to realize the gravity of what he did, and how it affected not only Lennon, but his wife, children and anybody who knew him.

He says:

“I recognized that that 25-year-old man, I don’t think he really appreciated the life that he was taking, that this was a human being. I feel now at 53 I have grown into a deeper understanding of what a human life is. I have changed a lot.”

He also told the parole board that he was seeking notoriety and fame to counter feelings of failure when he decided to kill Lennon.

“I would be something other than a nobody, and that was my reasoning at the time.”

Chapman has been in prison for nearly 28 years.

He was sentenced to 20 years to life after pleading guilty to the murder.

The parole board’s denial means he will remain in New York’s Attica Correctional Facility for at least two more years.

Sly Stone — Loose Booty & I Want To Take You Higher

Sly’s always been a peculiar cat. We won’t get into details here as we like to keep things mostly positive, but it would be remiss to not mention that he hasn’t always been the most reliable  and considerate performer, but when he was good, he was outtasight! Here he is performing at an awards show in 1975. You will recognize several phrases and snatches of his songs that have been sampled into other performer’s music (ie. The Beastie Boys).

For good measure, here’s what we are talking about. It’s the Beasties with “Shadrach”:

Here he is on The Dick Cavett Show in 1970:

Umphrey’s McGee — Plunger

Recorded 4/20/2008. I had Plunger as my ringtone on my phone for a long time. Whenever i would hear the specific section of the song that was my ringtone, I would instinctively check my pockets for my phone. Crazy times. (Editor’s Note: Extreme sarcasm in the last statement. Excuse his dull story.)

Bell Bottom Blues — Hidden Track’s Cover Wars

Bell Bottom Blues is of course on Derek & The Dominoes excellent 1970 release, Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs, the only album recorded by the outfit. Hidden Track has compiled several versions of the song for your listening pleasure.  Check them out here. We’ve included an acoustic live version recorded by “Slowhand” himself from 2002.

Bonnie Bramlett — What Pipes!

You may know her from Delaney & Bonnie, you may know her from providing backing vocals from everyone from The Allman Brothers to Stephen Stills to George Harrison. Or you may know her from her acting career. She was a bartender in Oliver Stone’s The Doors and Roseanne’s waitress friend on 90′s sitcom, Roseanne. Wherever you know her from, one thing’s for sure… this gal has got some pipes. Witness the examples we have posted.

The Midnight Special with Dickey Betts featuring Bonnie Bramlett and performing “Southbound”:

The Price Of Fame with Delaney & Bonnie featuring Eric Clapton & Dave Mason. Performing “Poor Elijah”:

Crosby, Stills & Nash — The Rundown

Rolling Stone with the scoop:
Rolling Stone recently sat down with Crosby, Stills & Nash to go track by track through their landmark 1969 debut album. Recorded before Neil Young joined their ranks, it contains many of their most enduring songs. “We were in love with each other at the time we recorded that album,” Graham Nash says. “We were new friends discovering new parts about each other and we had songs. And we had the ability to translate those songs into records that was astounding and we knew it. When we walked out of the studio with that two-track under our arm, we knew what it was going to do. We knew that it was going to be a hit. We knew that we had nailed something that wasn’t really that popular kind of then. It was all Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix and stuff and here comes this little acoustic record.”

Here’s the story behind seven songs from Crosby, Stills & Nash: Continue Reading…

Pandora To Be Silenced?

From Rolling Stone:

Web radio giant (and music recommendation service) Pandora is on the verge of shutting down due to high royalty fees, says the company’s founder. Despite a million daily listeners and an iPhone application that attracts roughly 40,000 new customers a day, Pandora’s founder says, “We’re approaching a pull-the-plug kind of decision. This is like a last stand for webcasting.” The cause of death may be a decision made last year by a federal panel that doubled the per-song performance royalty of tracks played on Internet radio stations. “I was on the bus when I get this message on my Treo,” Westergren tells the Washington Post. “I thought, ‘We’re dead.’ ” Pandora stands to lose 70 percent of its $25 million revenue in royalty fees. Negotiations are underway between Webcasters and SoundExchange, a company that represents artists and record companies, to lower the fees. By comparison, traditional radio stations don’t pay any royalties, while satellite radio stations face a much smaller fee. On June 26th, 2007, thousands of Internet radio stations went silent to protest the higher fees.

You can do what you want, but please don’t take away our Pandora!

Umphrey’s McGee — The Floor (Mash It Up)

From Umphrey’s blog, The Floor:

The theme for this year’s Halloween show started with the germination of our “new cover every show” West coast tour that opened 2008 for us. We debuted a mash up of the Beatles’ “Come Together” with Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer,” and have since played it a handful of times live. This got us thinking, what other possibilities are out there for potential mash ups? Other covers? Possibly originals of our own? A mix of the two? We’ll leave some of it to the imagination, but suffice it to say that this year’s Halloween concert will feature Umphrey’s McGee forging into some new musical territory, and, of course, throwing the best Halloween party we know how to. As part of it, we are encouraging people to dress the part. What does this mean? It means that you too can come as some sort of “mash up.” Let me give you some examples of what might work. Want to come as a group? Here’s an idea for a boxing match theme for three: you’ve got the promoter of the event, Don King Kong; and then a curious bout which history could have never predicted, the formidable young sensation Cassius Clay Aiken vs. the champion powerhouse smart-ass, Muhammad Ali G. This year is all about your own creativity, whether you want to be Boy George Bush, Roseanne Arnold Schwarzenegger, or Uncle Jesse Jackson, the world is your oyster.

Happy mashing.

Sounds like good times to us.
