John Bell — National Anthem (8/18/08)
It’s Monday. What did you do today? Hard day back at work? First day of the new school year? Still recovering from the weekend?
Well, I work for probably one of the best companies around and they shut down the office at noon and took the entire staff to the Braves game today! We kicked back with a few beers, hot dogs and good company and sweated in the 100 degree heat.

Guns N’ Roses — Chinese Democracy
Everybody’s favorite (well, somebody’s favorite) 80′s cock-rock wailer, W. Axl Rose’s tracks for his upcoming Guns N’ Roses album, Chinese Democracy, have leaked on-line. While we don’t have them, we are happy to report that it looks good that this album will be released this year and you know what that means–free Dr. Pepper for everyone!
In more good news, Buckethead plays on the album too.
Funny Monday — The Muppets Went Down To Georgia
While during some research about the song “Devil Went Down to Georgia,” I came across The Muppets doing their version of the song. It’s from episode 92 of “The Muppet Show” with special guest star Alan Arkin.
Neutral Milk Hotel — In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Allmusic‘s review of the album:
Perhaps best likened to a marching band on an acid trip, Neutral Milk Hotel’s second album is another quixotic sonic parade; lo-fi yet lush, impenetrable yet wholly accessible, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is either the work of a genius or an utter crackpot, with the truth probably falling somewhere in between. Again teaming with producer Robert Schneider, Jeff Mangum invests the material here with new maturity and clarity; while the songs run continuously together, as they did on the previous On Avery Island, there is a much clearer sense of shifting dynamics from track to track, with a greater emphasis on structure and texture. Mangum‘s vocals are far more emotive as well; whether caught in the rush of spiritual epiphany (“The King of Carrot Flowers Pts. Two and Three”) or in the grip of sexual anxiety (“Two-Headed Boy”), he sings with a new fervor, composed in equal measure of ecstasy and anguish. However, as his musical concepts continue to come into sharper focus, one hopes his stream-of-consciousness lyrical ideas soon begin to do the same; while Mangum spins his words with the rapid-fire intensity of a young Dylan, the songs are far too cryptic and abstract to fully sink in — In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is undoubtedly a major statement, but just what it’s saying is anyone’s guess.
Here is Neutral Milk Hotel’s Jeff Mangum performing, “The King Of Carrot Flowers”:
Robert Plant — The Battle Of Evermore
Jambands.com reports:
Robert Plant continued to explore his recent fascination with roots-music this weekend at Fairport Convention’s annual Cropredy Convention. The folk festival has been held each year in August since the early 1970s in the village of Cropredy in Oxfordshire, England. While onsite, Plant sat in with Kristina Donahue during her set on a version of Led Zeppelin’s “Battle of Evermore.” During his performance, he also honored the memory of Sandy Denny, who sang the classic selection with plant on Led Zeppelin’s untitled fourth album 37-years-ago. Plant’s tribute to Denny also a photo montage of the singer later on in the weekend. Report by Randy Ray
This gave me serious chills of the goosebump variety.
Donovan — Catch The Wind
The first album I ever bought was Paul McCartney’s 1982 release, Tug Of War. The first cassette I ever bought was in 1985 and it was Donovan’s Greatest Hits. You’d have never thought that I was a 11 year old, huh? I loved the simplicity in his songs, “Catch The Wind” and “Mellow Yellow”, while I loved the psychedelia of “Season Of The Witch’ and “Sunshine Superman”, then of course you have, “First There Is A Mountain”. All great tunes.
Here is Donovan with “Catch The Wind”:
And here’s “Mellow Yellow” with an introduction by famed San Francisco promoter, Bill Graham:
A Canine Celebration — Our Dogs
We at Musical Stew Daily certainly love our dogs. We have two goldens, Murphy and Sam. Murphy is the mischevious looking one on the left and Sam is nobility personified on the right. If you can’t tell, Murphy is riding out his first year on the planet (10 months) and Sam has been with us for 12 glorious years (where does the time go?). In celebration of our constant companions, we are offering the following odes to the furry creatures.
“Hey Bulldog” by The Beatles:
“Atomic Dog” by George Clinton and Parliament:
“Dogs” by Keller Williams:
“Black Dog” by Led Zeppelin:
And shamelessly, here are our dogs again. This is Murphy as a pup trying to attack his reflection:

Talking Heads — Sydney, Australia 1979
We’ll admit that we’re a little Talking Heads/David Byrne heavy today at Musical Stew, but is that a bad thing? We certainly don’t think so. Here’s a TH show from ’79.
Led Zeppelin — Bring It On Home
Here’s Zeppelin in 1970 performing their blues number, “Bring It On Home”. “Bring It Home” was in the news this past weekend as it was used in NBC’s Olympic coverage. Rolling Stone has the story:
Once upon a time, Led Zeppelin were strict about licensing their music to corporations for commercials. The wall came down momentarily when Cadillac used IV’s “Rock and Roll” in 2004. So imagine our surprise today when — while anxiously today’s finale of the Woman’s Canoe/Kayak finals (which the Australians took gold and silver in) — NBC aired a commercial promoting their Olympic coverage using Zep’s “Bring It On Home” as its soundtrack. Supposedly, “Bring It On Home” is the catch phrase for this summer’s Olympics, (with “It” meaning gold medals, which the U.S. is doing quite prodigiously). Here’s hoping they start using “Kashmir” in all their training montages.
Funny Monday — Will Ferrell And Pearl
Some possible rough language here folks.
David Byrne — Psycho Killer
If we had the category, we’d file this under “A TAD BIZARRE”.
