Daniel Johnston — True Love Will Find You In The End

After being discovered on MTV’s Cutting Edge in 1985, Daniel was bound for stardom. That is until he started acting and behaving in a manic way, trying to exorcise his demons. He was arrested for drawing Jesus fish on the Statue Of Liberty and intentionally crashed his father’s aircraft after the South By Southwest music festival. Daniel was commited to a “rest home” and diagnosed with bipolar disorder and a schizophrenic. Daniel has it mostly under control these days, with the help of his meds and some really understanding parents.

Charlie Hunter — Baboon Strength

Charlie Hunter, formerly of Concord, Ropeadope and Blue Note Labels, will self-release his next endeavor, Baboon Strength, on Spire Artist Media. The label is a co-venture with his long time manager, Chris Cuevas (Spire Artist Management). With a career spanning 15 years and a catalog that includes over 17 albums, Charlie Hunter continues to astound audiences with his prodigious and unique ability to play both guitar and bass lines simultaneously. Though he continues this tradition on Baboon Strength, the record is an absolute progression from his previous albums. The music has an electronic feel to it yet the tone is undeniably playful. Due out in mid-September, Baboon Strength will feature Tony Mason on drums, Erik Deutsch on organ, and of course, Charlie Hunter on his custom 7-string Novax guitar. The trio will tour the US and Europe throughout the fall and into 2009 in support of the record.

Umphrey’s McGee — Atlanta Update

Taken from their blog, The Floor:

Sometimes, things don’t go as planned.  As I sit in front of my computer and contemplate everything that’s happened since Saturday afternoon, it’s somewhat mind boggling to even think about where we’ve been.  Well, as Kevin has already documented, the fiasco that ensued following the torrential storm in Atlanta started things off on a disappointing note for all of us.  After a fantastic summer tour with STS9, we wanted to finish things off in a monumental way in Atlanta.  Unfortunately, mother nature had other plans.  As a musician, there’s not really a word to describe the feeling of not getting to rock out for some of your most dedicated fans for reasons out of your control.  We were all devastated and frustrated that we had absolutely no way to get up on stage and share music with all of the folks that were there on Saturday.  The odds of us playing that night decreased with every minute past 7:45, when the power went out (it didn’t come back on 2 hours after curfew).  We sat on the bus trying to conjure scenarios in which we could return to Atlanta and make this up to the folks who have supported us there for so many years.  While we tried, we couldn’t completely solidify a deal that night to announce at our recently canceled show. We’re almost there with something for you guys as I write, so hang tight.
