Jerry Garcia — Birthday Week

Well it seems that someone else is having a Jerry Week too. Man, I thought we were so clever.

From Jambands.com:

SIRIUS’ Grateful Dead channel will celebrate Jerry Garcia with nine days of special programming from his birthday on August 1 to the anniversary of his death on August 9. “Jerry Week” will feature music from Garcia’s various bands and side projects, including the Jerry Garcia Band, Legion of Mary and Old & In The Way. The special will also celebrate Garcia’s solo work and collaborations with Merl Saunders, Howard Wales, and David Grisman, among others. The nine day special will also showcase concerts and “Jerry Memories”— anecdotes and stories from prominent artists in the Grateful Dead family and SIRIUS listeners, as well as Garcia’s longtime companion, Carolyn “Mountain Girl” Garcia. For more on SIRIUS, and its recent merger with former rival XM Radio, please visit Relix.com.

Creedence Clearwater Revival — Re-Issue

Creedence Clearwater Revival will reissue their first six albums on September 30th, with each album digitally remastered and stocked with bonus tracks. Concord Music Group will release the reissues after buying back the CCR discography in 2004. The albums getting the deluxe tribute are Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bayou Country, Green River, Willy & The Poor Boys, Cosmo’s Factory and Pendulum. The six albums were recorded in the span of three years, from 1968 to 1970, marking one of the most impressive and prolific stretches for any band of the era. Among the highlights of the bonus material include an alternate version of “Down on the Corner” (on Willy) and a “Born on the Bayou” recorded with CCR and Booker T. & the MGs (on Cosmo.)

Phish — Red Rocks (6/11/1994) — Repost from 8/20/08

As a side note, we saw this on Phish.net (7/30/09):

Our thoughts are with the friends and family of Tasha Goodson, who fell 25 feet into a rock cave near Independence Pass at the Ice Caves outside of Aspen. Tasha had intended to attend the upcoming Red Rocks shows with boyfriend Addison Choquette before their trip with her 10-year old brother Titan and 3-month old baby Ozley Titan. She was rescued by Mountain Rescue and life-flighted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction CO. Upon arrival she was in critcal condition and admitted to the ICU, with injuries including a fractured skull, two fractured wrists, broken vertebrae in the neck and lower back, and broken ribs, which puntured and collapsed one of her lungs. One of her first questions after opening her eyes was, “Can we still and go see Phish?” but she was unfortunately be missing the shows. Those on site, please dance your assess off in her honor.

And a nice piece on the band on Hidden Track:

From the mid ’90s until their breakup in 2004, Phish was often mocked by the mainstream press for a variety of reasons, namely their lack of radio and commercial success, relatively weak album sales, their obsessively devoted fan base of neo-hippies who follow them around to show after show (on drugs, always on drugs). With the band’s return at Hampton this past March the common perception of the group is not so common anymore, with Phish now getting treated like any other major act in the industry. (more…)

Phish — gadiel.com/phish Has Returned

In anticipation of the (possible) Phish reunion, Andy Gadiel’s Phish Page has returned. I remember back in the pre-hiatus days of Phish, that every morning I started  my computer up, the first thing I saw was Andy’s page. Reporting the goings-on Phishland and whatnot, the latest setlists, etc. It was my momentary escape or perhaps denial that I was now a 9-5 working man. Welcome back Andy! We’re certainly glad to have you!

Andy hasn’t been away doing nothing. As we all know, he founded and runs jambase.com .

You Have The Right To… Surf?

Everybody knows the Beach Boys. In fact, I would guess that my first favorite song was probably a Beach Boys song. They were always so darn catchy and they created their own genre, Surf Pop. Of course only one of the Beach Boys could really surf; that was Dennis Wilson. Actually Dennis just had his solo release, Pacific Ocean Blue just re-released.

One of the other Wilson brothers, Brian, was the genius. He was known for his incessant knob twisting in the studio, his use of vocal harmonies and studio perfection, all the way to madness. Brian went into seclusion around 1970 and came out sometime in the mid-1970′s. He appeared on a new variety program called, NBC’s Saturday Night in a spoof skit with Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi. Of course this became Saturday Night Live and his appearance is considered legendary. Here it is, from 1975, it’s Saturday Night!
